Fwd: Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Fall 2014 Grants

This announcement is being sent to several lists. Please excuse any duplication. The Metro Detroit Book & Author Society is pleased to announce that the following two (2) grants are available. These will be awarded at the October 21, 2013, Book & Author Luncheon at Burton Manor in Livonia. The winners will receive a free ticket to the Fall 2013 luncheon and must be present to receive the grant. Grant winners are also required to submit a 22’’ x 28” project report poster showing how the grant was used to be displayed at the Spring 2014 luncheon. Application forms with instructions and reporting requirements are attached. Applications are due on Monday, September 23, 2013. 1. The Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award: $1000. This grant is awarded to a Friends of the Library group in the metro-Detroit area to support a program or project that fills a significant need affecting the library's patrons and community. The award was established to honor the late Elaine R. Irvin, who was a devoted member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board for many years. Elaine worked for the Friends of the Detroit Public Library and was dedicated to the principle that "good libraries need good Friends." 2. The Dick Johnston Award: $2000. This grant is awarded to a public library in the metro-Detroit area for the purpose of establishing or improving a library collection. The award was established to honor the late Dick Johnston, who was a member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society and served as its President in 1980 and 1981. Mr. Johnston was also President of the Michigan Library Association and Director of the Birmingham and Bloomfield Township Libraries.
