The Youth Services staff is in charge of his care. (Yes, Dolores is male-we found out a year after the community named him.) He does not need to eat every day, so we feed him on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and bathe him once a week for additional hydration. The public loves him, and we feed him where they can watch and we also get him out for people to hold him on request (we accommodate them as often as we have staff to spare.) It works very well for us, and the people in our community adore him. Something we started a year ago was the Dragon Master program. We offer middle school students the chance to volunteer to come one day a week to feed/bathe Dolores. There are a number of middle school teachers here who have bearded dragons in their classrooms, so the students already have some experience when they get to us. It has been a great way to get a steady stream of kids who might not otherwise participate to interact at the library . Thank you to all who responded to our library pet question. We are still not sure about getting a pet but this was certainly helpful. For those who asked for follow up, this is a summary of responses: Two degus, 3 bearded dragons, a uromastyxs, hedgehog, red eared slider aquatic turtle.aquariums with fish (friends of the library fundraised a fee for monthly cleaning), cat, frog, leopard gecko, Asmo the Library Snake (cornsnake) on FB Caretakers: Staff, an interested person in charge, Dragon Master Program with student volunteers, and adult volunteers The pictures were wonderful and we ended up learning about animals we didn't even know existed.
