Re: [Michlib-l] Michlib-l Digest, Vol 122, Issue 5

To Jesse Cornea, Library Associate, Brandon Twp Public Library AI found the following information about the science fiction short story, found the title and synopsis, but no author, still looking. Hope this helps: Title: "The Verdant Reign" On the planet Xylos, a vibrant, verdant world, the dominant life form wasn't animal, but plant - a sprawling, interconnected network of sentient flora called "The Core." Humans, forced to adapt to this alien ecosystem, lived in precarious harmony beneath the Core's watchful tendrils, their lives dictated by its whims and needs. The Core and Its Control: The Canopy: The Core manifested as a vast canopy of luminous, bioluminescent leaves that spanned the entire planet, casting a soft, ethereal glow. It communicated through subtle shifts in light patterns and subtle vibrations that only the most attuned could interpret. Symbiosis: Humans relied on the Core for sustenance, drawing nutrients from specialized "fruiting vines" that grew based on the planet's needs. In return, the Core required the humans to maintain the delicate balance of the ecosystem, performing tasks like pruning excess vegetation and dispersing seeds. The Keepers: A select group of humans, known as the "Keepers," were chosen from birth for their unique ability to perceive the Core's signals and interpret its desires. They acted as intermediaries between the human population and the Core, ensuring compliance and mediating potential conflicts. Life Under the Core: The story explores the concept of a planet ruled by an intelligent, interconnected plant life, raising questions about the balance between human needs and the natural world. The Cost of Control: The narrative examines the potential dangers of relying too heavily on a single, controlling entity, highlighting the importance of autonomy and critical thinking. Symbiosis and Responsibility: The story delves into the complexities of a symbiotic relationship, where both parties need to adapt and compromise for mutual survival. -----Original Message----- From: Michlib-l <michlib-l-bounces@mcls.org> On Behalf Of michlib-l-request@mcls.org Sent: Thursday, December 5, 2024 12:00 PM To: michlib-l@mcls.org Subject: Michlib-l Digest, Vol 122, Issue 5 Send Michlib-l mailing list submissions to michlib-l@mcls.org To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit https://mail3.mcls.org/mailman/listinfo/michlib-l or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to michlib-l-request@mcls.org You can reach the person managing the list at michlib-l-owner@mcls.org When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Michlib-l digest..." I attached all our documentation on the process and the application. We love having the perspective of a teen on our board. Even though they are non-voting, they provide excellent input. We treat them the same as any other board member and have the same responsibilities, except for voting and their term. They are with us for one year, June through May. The hardest part of this is the recruitment. Finding the best teachers to go through helps, and utilizing the current teen to help recruit has been very fruitful. Let me know if you have any questions. Valerie Meyerson (she/her) Library Director Petoskey District Library Please think of the environment before printing this message.
