Maker Office Hours

Presented by Kristin Fontichiaro and Mayank Khanna, Making in Michigan Libraries project

Friday, December 4, 5:30 - 6:30pm Eastern (tonight!)

When we put out a call last month for libraries to host our Making in Michigan Libraries PD Summer Road trip, we were stunned by the number of interested libraries. We're still working on reviewing the proposals, but we now know that the hunger for making is as big in Michigan as we anticipated! So to help jumpstart your maker activities (or to build on what you are already doing), we will be hosting an online "Maker Office Hours,” 'broadcasting' from the Ann Arbor District Library's Secret Lab (so if you're local, feel free to join us face-to-face) in the basement of the downtown branch and bring your laptop. Login details are below. We'll start by sharing about ten minutes of strategies about establishing the Big Picture goals of your making, then open up the floor for the rest of the hour for your questions and ideas about making.

If you cannot participate live, we will archive the conversation at http://makinglibraries.si.umich.edu.

If you like this format, we'll try to make this a monthly event. Hope to see you online!

Best,

Kristin Fontichiaro & Mayank Khanna

Data Presentation: Showcasing Your Data With Charts & Graphs
Presented by Tierney Steelberg, Master’s Student, U-M School of Information

Monday, December 7 from 8-9pm

Explore data presentation and learn how you can use charts and graphs to answer questions about your data. This webinar will answer questions like: what are some rules of thumb for creating impactful charts? when is it best to use one chart type over another? and which will readers find easier to swallow, a pie chart or a waffle chart? Discover new types of charts, and rediscover old ones, while learning how to put them to use most effectively.

Preparing for the Leap: Information Literacy instructional strategies to prepare college-bound high schoolers for the world of academic libraries and college-level research

Presented by Erin Curtis, Master’s Student, U-M School of Information

Tuesday, December 8, 7-8pm

College freshman often understandably find themselves overwhelmed by the breadth and depth of library resources as they make their first forays into college-level research expected of them. With little exposure to large databases, searching techniques, and the open-minded attitude necessary to conduct research with a minimum of stress, students can end up turning to more familiar but less effective resources such as Google and Wikipedia, undercutting their instructors’ attempts to have them conduct in-depth research. This webinar will explore strategies that high school teachers, librarians, and media specialists can use to prepare their college-bound students for the world of academic research so that students have the necessary toolkit to help them feel comfortable and confident using library resources.
