These in-person sessions are sponsored by MiOSHA and FREE but for parking (but parking will cost $5)..

 

These two sessions will address issues in the public library and school environments and will address situations involving individuals with mental health conditions as well as neurodivergent individuals.

 

The speaker is well known for these sessions and has trained municipalities, libraries and first responders on these topics around the state. He has also presented at MLA.

MIOSHA invites you to attend two essential, free workplace safety training sessions on December 16, 2024, at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. These sessions will equip participants with strategies to enhance workplace violence prevention and threat management.

Morning Session: Verbal De-Escalation and Situational Awareness

Learn verbal diffusion techniques, situational awareness, and victim avoidance strategies to prevent and manage challenging situations.

Topics Include:

  • Situational Awareness: Recognizing potential threats in your environment.
  • Types of Risks: Understanding perpetrators, aggressors, and field-community hazards.
  • Scanning for Threats: How to identify warning signs—"Did you see it coming?"
  • Pre-Attack Indicators: Recognizing verbal and non-verbal cues.
  • Verbal De-Escalation Techniques: Using positive communication to defuse tension.
  • Navigating Difficult Conversations: Active listening, empathic communication, and setting boundaries.
  • Understanding Challenges: Managing neuro-divergent individuals, angry customers, and difficult co-workers or patrons.
  • Conflict Resolution: Stages and rules of engagement for handling disputes.
  • Personal Safety: Developing “exit strategies” for unsafe situations.

About This Training:
Despite guidelines from OSHA, the FBI, the Secret Service, and DHS, many organizations have yet to implement Active Threat Assessment Programs or Comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention Systems. Without these systems, organizations risk losing critical opportunities to identify, assess, manage, and mitigate threats posed by aggressive individuals to schools, libraries, or businesses. Simply having a Workplace Violence Prevention Policy is not enough.

Topics Include:

  • Best Practices for Violence Prevention: Insights from the Secret Service, FBI, and DHS guidelines.
  • Identifying and Managing Behaviors of Concern: Recognizing warning signs displayed by students, patrons, customers, and employees.
  • Institutionalizing a Violence Prevention System:
    • Developing policies and stakeholder awareness training.
    • Establishing systems for reporting and threat assessment teams.
    • Conducting security audits and creating emergency operations plans.
    • Preparing for crisis recovery.
  • Conducting Threat Investigations: Steps to evaluate and respond effectively.
  • Managing Threats and Individuals of Concern:
    • Addressing specific threats to employees or the organization.
    • Providing appropriate interventions and follow-up.
  • Building Partnerships: Collaborating with external resources, law enforcement, and other agencies for comprehensive prevention strategies.
