Job Description

Job Title:  Library Director

Reports to:  Library Board of Directors

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Submits recommendations on library policies and services to the Library Board of Directors and implements policy decisions

·         Prepares an annual budget for the library

·         Oversees maintenance of the library facility and its functioning

·         Recommends candidates to the Library Board for hire

·         Conducts a monthly Board meeting and is responsible for reporting the operations of the library to the Board

·         Participates in the performance evaluations of staff members

·         Reviews and evaluates orders for materials for the library in all formats (books, magazines, and audiovisual materials)

·         Reviews and evaluates library expenditures

·         Plans and conducts staff meetings and participates in community and professional meetings to discuss and act on library issues

·         Provides library public relations services

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manages three department heads: Reference Department, Circulation Department, and Young People’s Department.  Responsibilities include the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units.  Directly supervises the office assistant.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsible for interviewing, recommending for hire, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.  Reconciles expenditures and income with township records.

Education and/or Experience:

Master’s Degree (M.L.S.) Three to five years of managerial and reference related experience.

Master’s Degree in Library Science
