Children’s Department

Full-Time Librarian 1 or Library Assistant

The Public Libraries of Saginaw is seeking a Children’s Librarian to empower children to become creative thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers and resourceful users of information.

General Purpose

Work with the branch head and other staff members to provide reference and programming for children and families.

Duties and Responsibilties

• Plan, organize and carry-out children’s programming which includes storytelling, puppet shows, crafts and STEM programs.
• Answer reference questions and provide reader’s advisory for children, parents, students and care-givers.
• Oversee collection development and maintenance of all juvenile collections.
• Interact and plan library services with various community organizations and schools.
• Supervise other children’s department staff at the library branch.
• Be familiar with technological innovations that affect libraries and impact children’s lives.
• Collaborate with other Children’s and Teen Services employees.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of public service, Horizon, and other computer applications is necessary. 
• Must be enthusiastic about children’s library services, children’s literature, and truly enjoy working with children.
• Ability to work well with other staff and patrons is required.
• Ability to reach, stoop, bend, and set up chairs and tables for programs. 
• Some travel between branches for meetings is necessary. This position requires evening and weekend work.

Minimum Education and Experience

Librarian 1

Position requires an ALA accredited master’s degree in Library or Information Science.

Library Assistant

Position requires a four year college degree with applicable library experience.

Compensation

Librarian 1

$44,295 to $55,833 in six steps and an excellent benefit package.

Library Assistant

$37,018 to $46,676 in six steps and an excellent benefit package.
