Locally produced children’s TV shows are a thing of the past, but the genre was important in the early days of television. The speakers will discuss how Soupy Sales, Johnny Ginger, Captain Jolly, and other influenced the hearts and minds of Baby Boomers—with a special appearance by White Fang. · Ancient Trails, Ancient Trades: Michigan’s Copper Long before Stonehenge and the pyramids were built, a thriving industry flourished near the Lake Superior shores. Native people removed copper from shallow pit mines in large quantities and traded it across the continent. This story, along with tales of ancient waterfalls and hunting grounds—all underwater—will be explored in this session. · The Milliken Years: Civility, Cooperation, and Progress

Pickard This keynote explores some of the stories of African-American entrepreneurs in Detroit, detailing the individuals who helped build Detroit by first founding businesses that could weather the varying social and economic climates of the city. From Basketball to City Hall: The Dave Bing Story with Dave Bing Come hear Mayor Bing speak about his life as a point guard in the NBA, his experiences as a Michigan businessman, and how he served the people of Detroit. Aretha Franklin: The Queen of Soul with Susan Whitall, Earline Franklin, and Cristal Franklin While a worldwide music sensation, Aretha Franklin never lost her love of Detroit. This keynote Bargains and Bankruptcy: Saving the Motor City with Gerald E. Rosen The history of Detroit’s recession and resurgence is a popular subject today. The city’s rebirth has the rest of the country—and even much of the world—watching closely. This keynote will address the causes of Detroit’s bankruptcy and how, today, the city is enjoying a period of renaissance.
