Greetings from Michigan Humanities,

I’m writing with a reminder about our Poetry Out Loud registration deadline, which is approaching three weeks from tomorrow on Thursday, November 21.

If you know of teachers or homeschool programs in your area who may be interested in this free poetry curriculum and competition opportunity, please direct them to me (Katie Wittenauer: kwittenauer@mihumanities.org).

Here are a few quick facts about Poetry Out Loud in Michigan:

·         Poetry Out Loud (POL) is a national poetry recitation competition for high school students. By encouraging youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

·         Poetry Out Loud materials are provided to each partnering high school or homeschool program at no cost.

·         Participating high schools host their own competitions and select a student to represent their school at the state finals. Michigan’s POL State Finals will be held on March 13 and 14, 2020.

·         Poetry Out Loud is a partnership of Michigan Humanities (MH), Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Poetry Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

·         You can take a look at Poetry Out Loud students in action via the following video (https://youtu.be/nJTEmA_PoFo) and learn more by visiting our Michigan Humanities’ Poetry Out Loud website (https://www.michiganhumanities.org/poetry-out-loud/).

Please let me know if there are any questions I can help answer, and thank you for spreading the word about Poetry Out Loud!

Best,
Katie
