These revised competencies place a significant emphasis on serving children and families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Moreover, among the goals listed in the 2017-2020 ALSC Strategic Plan is the development of an online cultural competency training to be made available for members of the division. The ALSC Education Committee is looking for presenters for online webinars relating to equity and understanding social identifiers such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, ability, size, age, and more. The committee also invites proposals for additional topics related to diversity and inclusion. Some example objectives for webinars might include (but are not limited to): • Participants will be able to explain how social and cultural factors impact the emotional, behavioral, social, and literacy development of children. • Participants will be able to explain strategies for supporting culturally competent library service to children, including strategies for programming and collection development. • Participants will be able to name and describe various systems of discrimination such as classism, racism, and ableism. • Participants will be able to articulate the importance of enacting culturally competent library service to children. If you are interested in presenting a webinar, proposals may be submitted to http://www.ala.org/alsc/online-education-proposal. ALSC webinar presenters are compensated $100 for developing the webinar. Questions may be submitted to ALSC Education Committee Co-Chairs Rachel Reinwald (rreinwa2@gmail.com) or Danielle Hartsfield (danielleforest@gmail.com).
