Libraries invited to join social media activity this Banned Books Week
This Banned Books Week, let patrons know that their words have power — especially their tweets.
During Banned Books Week (Sept. 24-30), the Office for Intellectual Freedom is inviting libraries and nonprofits to partner with it for the Rebel Reader Twitter Tournament, a Banned Books Week activity that encourages readers to discuss censorship online. Partners receive a digital toolkit, and partner libraries are entered into a drawing for intellectual freedom-themed prizes.

PLA to host discussion of opioid crisis for libraries
PLA is partnering with WebJunction to host a virtual "town hall meeting" to discuss the opioid epidemic for public library professionals. The event will be held 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Representatives from libraries and other community organizations will describe their local efforts and partnerships in addressing this epidemic. Town hall participants will be given the opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns as PLA works toward developing a plant to address on this issue.

PLA echoes ALA statement condemning racism and violence in Charlottesville
The Public Library Association (PLA) proudly supports the American Library Association's (ALA) position on the recent tragic violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. Recently ALA President Jim Neal released a statement expressing “our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those lost and injured” during the protests.

New School Library Research article examines the development of reading lists
A new article detailing the results of a small-scale study exploring the design and use of reading lists by UK school librarians and teachers is now available in volume 20 of the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) peer-reviewed online journal, School Library Research (SLR).
