townships. This presentation delves into the methodology for uncovering elusive pre-statehood records, interpreting scarce clues, and resolving conflicting evidence to trace and confirm family relationships.

Celebrating 2025-2026 Michigan Author Award Recipient Jim Daniels
The Library of Michigan and Library of Michigan Foundation honored 2025-2026
Michigan Author Award Recipient Jim Daniels at Marshall District Library on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at
Marshall District Library in Marshall, MI. The event included remarks by Special Collections Manager David Votta and Library of Michigan Executive Director Sarah Shaw.
In addition to being honored with the Michigan Author Award, Daniels discussed his work
An Ignorance of Trees: A Memoir in Essays as the event was also one of his scheduled author programs as part of the
2026 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour. An Ignorance of Trees was recognized as one of 20 selections on the 2026
Michigan Notable Books list.
Special thank you to everyone who attended as well as to Marshall District Library in hosting the program. The Michigan Author Award is

Library of Michigan on the road to 2026 Historical Society of Michigan Upper Peninsula History Conference
Library of Michigan librarians Adam Oster and Matt Pacer, along with Library of Michigan Foundation Executive Director Sarah Shaw, packed
the travel van Thursday morning to hit the road for the 2026 Historical Society of Michigan
Upper Peninsula History Conference in Marquette. They will be showcasing the Library of Michigan's collections and services in the exhibit area of the conference as well as making some library visits throughout the trip.
The drive up to Marquette included a stop in Pickford at both the
Pickford Area Historical Society Museum and the
Pickford Community Library branch of
Superior District Library. Both organizations had yearbooks to donate to the Library of Michigan and showcased their facilities to Adam, Matt, and Sarah. Special thanks to Dianne Schmitigal of Pickford Area Historical
Society and Superior District Library Director Lisa Waskin for being wonderful hosts.
Attendees to the Upper Peninsula History Conference are encouraged to visit the Library of Michigan exhibit table and learn more about
the resources of the Library of Michigan. If attendees have Michigan yearbooks to donate as part of the
Michigan Yearbook Collection Project, feel free to bring them to the conference on Saturday and drop them off at the Library of Michigan exhibit table. The Library of Michigan is proud to support the Upper Peninsula History
Conference.

2026 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour and 2027 MNB List Submissions
Authors programs are still taking place throughout Michigan as part of the 2026 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour. Thank you to all the
libraries who have hosted authors so far as well as to everyone who attended those programs. The full schedule of Michigan Notable Books Author Tour events is listed on Michigan.gov/NotableBooks.
The Michigan Notable Books selection committee is starting to review submissions for the 2027 Michigan Notable Books list. Authors, publishers,
or interested person who wishes to submit books or titles for review is encouraged to do so. All submissions must come with a 2026 copyright date to be considered for the 2027 Michigan Notable Books list. A complete list of submission criteria is available
on the Michigan Notable Books website. Questions about submissions or anything else connected to the Michigan Notable Books program should be emailed to
