Cooperative (Michigan)
The Superiorland Library Cooperative is seeking candidates for
the position of
Director. The Cooperative focuses on collaboration and resource
sharing
among its 38
public
library members
in northern Michigan and is governed by a
nine-member Board
of Directors.
The staff of 5 use an $850,000 budget to offer innovative
technology strategies, access to electronic
resources, technical training and support, public library
consulting and
to
manage the
Upper Peninsula Region of Library Cooperation (UPRLC), an integrated
library system,
which serves 85
school, public, and tribal libraries.
The Superiorland Cooperative is headquartered in Marquette, the
largest city in
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and home to Northern Michigan
University.
Marquette, located on the spectacular shores of Lake Superior,
was named one of
the “Ten Best Small Cities to Raise a Family” by Forbes Magazine
(October
2010). Northern Michigan is renowned for its four-season
natural beauty
and virtually endless recreational opportunities.

Position
requirements:
A graduate degree in Library and Information Science from a
program accredited
by the American Library Association; a minimum of four years of
progressively
responsible administrative and supervisory experience in a
public library;
possession of or
the ability to attain a valid Michigan driver's license and
transportation for
travel.
Additional
requirements
include proven fiscal and personnel
management
abilities; strong verbal and written communication skills; a
thorough
understanding of library technology trends and applications;
and, a
collaborative, approachable personal style that will develop
effective working
relationships with Board members, library directors and
trustees, staff,
community and governmental groups and the general public. The
ability to
lead an organization through change, to interact effectively
with multiple
constituencies, and to serve as an active representative of the
cooperative
within the region, state and nationally is essential. The
Director is expected to share the
cooperative’s belief that “Cooperation among members makes
better library
service possible and growth sustainable.”
Experience
working with or reporting to a governing board is desirable.
Successful
grant-writing desirable. Contract negotiation and management
experience,
as well as ERate experience, is desirable.
The
position
requires
frequent travel
to member libraries and to statewide planning meetings and state
and national
conferences; some evening hours and some overnights travel.

Compensation:
from $68,000
dependent on
qualifications and experience; excellent benefit package which
includes: health
insurance; retirement plan; life insurance.
