In reading the Trustees Handbook put out by the Library of Michigan, it seems that receiving compensation for serving on a Library Board is a conflict of interest. I just reviewed it when this question came up.

Pages 11 & 14 both have a blurb about Trustees not benefiting financially from their affiliation with their library.

I am certainly not a lawyer, but I was always under the impression that being a Trustee was a volunteer position even when elected.

This is a great question for Clare.

Our board members are elected &

they don’t get paid. We don’t even pay them mileage if they go to a library mtg at our co-op.

Subject: [Michlib-l] Board members compensation

Our library board director was wondering, do any libraries pay there board members? Other businesses that hold monthly meetings pays their  board. The average is about $30 per meeting.

We are curious, because it is very hard to find board members and very hard when we do get one for them to actual participate. Maybe.... they would be more involved if they got paid. Just an idea they were batting around.
Thank you for your time and your thoughts on this matter.
