Programs for the Public 2023 Schedule

The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce its 2023 schedule of programs. This series of programs will occur on the first Thursday of each month starting at 6:30PM in the evening. All 12 sessions will take place virtually over Zoom and registration is required.

ReadMichigan.org eBook Collection

Looking for something to read this holiday season without wait lists or holds? Need a title for a book club that all the members can get a copy of? Check out the collections on ReadMichigan.org! ReadMichigan is an eBook platform with hundreds of fiction and non-fiction titles that focus on Michigan topics and books by Michigan authors. The collection was initially developed in early 2022 between the Library of Michigan and the presses of University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University. Michigan Humanities provided important financial support and is also a founding partner of the project. Recent additions to the platform include several hundred Michigan Local Town Histories from Arcadia Publishing/The History Press as well as poetry and fiction from Dzanc and Mayapple presses.

These eBooks can easily be read online in an Internet browser with no special software. Creating a username and password allows readers to save favorites, create bookmarks, add notes, sync preferences across devices, and rate books. Users can also use the Bibliolabs app that is available for Apple, Android and Amazon devices, which allows readers to download books and read them offline. Look for links to the app on the bottom right corner of the ReadMichigan.org site.

History Detectives Grand Rapids 2023

The Library of Michigan is glad to once again be a partnering organization with History Detectives Grand Rapids. Originally started in 2008 by staff members of the Local History and Special Collections department at Grand Rapids Public Library, the program has evolved into a day-long event featuring 6 speakers presenting on a full house of local history topics. The next History Detectives Grand Rapids is taking place at the Grand Rapids Public Library on January 21, 2023. The schedule of presentations includes:

9:30am | 50 Years Later: A Look Back at the Fight Over the ERA in Grand Rapids
10:30am | Vanished Market Avenue NW: From Fulton to Monroe
11:30am | Emmett Bolden v Grand Rapids Operating Company (Keith Theatre)
1:00pm | 1913: Automobiles and Their Owners in Grand Rapids
2:00pm | The Beginnings of Sewage Treatment in Grand Rapids
3:00pm | What Sanborn Maps Reveal about Grand Rapids
