
Monday, Sept. 9th The PBB Disaster at 50: Reflections, Critical Lessons, and a Path Forward Dr. Brittany Fremion, CMU; Dr. Ben Peterson, Alma College; and Dr. Norm Keon, PBB Community Partner and Epidemiologist, Mid-Michigan District Health Department The panel will reflect on the 1973 disaster at the Velsicol Chemical Co. plant in St. Louis, Michigan, that led to large-scale contamination that exposed farm animals, wildlife, and nearly 8.5 million Michiganders. Tuesday, Sept. 24th Christopher Paul Curtis Making of an Author 101 The David and Eunice Sutherland Burgess Lecture We are honored to welcome award-winning author, Christopher Paul Curtis, to CMU. In his talk, he will trace his path to becoming a writer of historical fiction for children and the importance certain people played along the way. Born in Flint, Michigan, in 1953, Curtis was working on an auto assembly line when he began writing. His esteemed novels center on African-American families and tackle tough issues with humor and honesty. Tuesday, Oct. 29th As Sacred to Us: Simon Pokagon's Birch Bark Stories in Their Contexts Dr. Blaire Morseau, MSU Dr. Morseau will discuss her new edited volume about 19th-century Potawatomi author Simon Pokagon and the ways he elevated thousands of years of Indigenous knowledge in his stories. The Clarke's collection of Simon Pokagon's birch bark books, originally printed in 1893 and 1901, will be on view in the Clarke after the talk. Dr. Morseau is a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi with ancestral ties to the Grand River Bands of Ottawa, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Michigan State University. All Clarke Speaker Series events will take place in the Sarah and Daniel Opperman Auditorium, Park Library, beginning at 7:00 pm. All programs are free and open to the public.
