If the email was just textual (and all descriptions I have read have not mentioned that there was any attachment), and you replied, you don’t have any
extra cause to worry that you are now infected with something because of receiving
that email. (Of course, you should already be running up to date security software and taking all manner of precautions to practice safe computing. If you
aren’t doing that, then take this as motivation to start doing so.)
What you need to do is be aware and alert for further contact that may try to take this a step further and ask you to open something, download something, provide
further information, etc. This is called social engineering. It has come a long way from the “Nigerian scam” days.

If this is indeed a phishing scam, you don’t want to open it or respond. You need to delete the email itself without opening it.
It could corrupt your computer.

The messages started arriving last week and are each addressed to "Dear Library Director" and worded in one of several different ways:

I am a patron of the library. I believe that libraries are vital to our community and would like to be more involved in how our library is run. Is there an upcoming public meeting that I could attend to elaborate

I am a taxpayer and a voter. I believe that libraries are vital to our community but that spending for our library is just too high. Is there an upcoming public meeting that I could attend to elaborate my views?

In some emails, funding is too high - some too low. In some, he is a patron - a donor - or a taxpayer and voter
IT staff in those states have responded (and I quote) "DO NOT RESPOND. Please delete the message from your computer as it is a phishing scam and could possibly be malicious".
Just a heads up in case you start receiving these messages!
