With the variations reported so far, these "Dear Library Director" emails could be many things, but one possibility is that they are part of a semi-targeted phishing / social engineering campaign.

After replying with details of the next library board meeting, the next message may be along the lines of "Thank you! Looking forward to next week's board meeting! Attached is a document with a preview of the issues I intend to raise during public comment. The password is..." or "I have shared the following file with you via [service]"... where the document / link in questions would be malicious.

A more patient actor would string you along for a decent amount of time before delivering the exploit attempt.

I'd advise an extra dose of caution if you choose to proceed further with the email in question.

Subject: [Michlib-l] Friday MAP Fun: Answer A Question, Win a Kindle Fire Tablet! Circulate The Greatest Number Of MAP Passes This Summer, And Win Another One!
All,

As you are aware, the Michigan Activity Pass program is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year http://tln.lib.mi.us/mapcvr/Files/MAP%202017_Release_FINAL.pdf  The 10th year of MAP starts next Wednesday, May 24. In order to build in an additional wow! factor, as well as to increase awareness among library staff when it comes to all the great destination venues that can be accessed via the Michigan Activity Pass program, and then of course promoted to library patrons, TLN went shopping. On Black Friday. Or maybe it was on Cyber Monday?! For Kindle Fire tablets.  Whichever day, we bought a dozen Kindle Fire tablets. At a very, very good price.

Now, the real fun begins...we get to start giving those tablets to participating MAP libraries! For the peak MAP usage months of June, July, and August, we will award one Kindle Fire tablet (5th generation; 7" display; 8gb; quad-core processor; dual cameras; microSD slot for up to 128gb of expandable storage) to the libraries in their respective library cooperatives that circulate the greatest number of MAP passes that month. Four libraries will win in June. This includes libraries in Woodlands, Detroit, Suburban, and Southwest library cooperatives. Four libraries will win in July. This includes libraries in Superiorland, Northland, Mid-Michigan, and Lakeland library cooperatives. Three libraries will win in August. This includes libraries in MidEastern, White Pine, and TLN library cooperatives. That makes for a total of 11 Kindle Fire tablets! Prizes will be awarded in early July, early August, and early September to the winning libraries, based on MAP circulation totals from the previous month. We will ship the tablet to the winning library via RIDES (or for the winning TLN library, TLN) delivery. We know you already promote MAP to your patrons, and we are very appreciative of that fact. But now you can help win a Kindle Fire tablet for your library by really, really promoting MAP to your patrons! We make promotion easy by providing you with brochures (just updated for 2017-18, now includes accessibility information), posters, bookmarks, a PowerPoint presentation, etc all available at http://tln.lib.mi.us/map/

For library cooperative directors, please feel free to share the information about our June/July/August MAP contest with staff in any of your member libraries that may not be subscribed to the Michlib-l listserv.

Now, I said we bought a dozen Kindle Fire tablets. Yes, we did. But there are only 11 library cooperatives. What's up with that? We need to give away 12 tablets! So, let's start the party right now by giving away that 12th Kindle Fire tablet. The first library that is a participating MAP library that correctly answers the below *** question, will win that 12th Kindle Fire tablet!

Here are the guidelines for today's MAP quiz contest:

1. Your library must be included in the MAP database http://www.plymouthrockets.com/map2016/ Every public library in Michigan is included in the MAP database, making every public library eligible to win!
2. More than one library will submit the correct answer, as the question isn't hard, and every person who is reading this message is an information professional. As that is the case, the first library with the correct answer as determined by the time stamp of their email answer back to me, will be declared the winner.
3. TLN and/or its staff are not eligible to win.

Here is your question. Drum roll, please: Or for more fun, get warmed up by listening to this tune from the 1960's which, if you are old enough like me, you will remember :( Even if you aren't, you still have to admit that it has a pretty darn good drum roll part:

***What is the name of the SMALLEST place in Michigan to have not just one but two, destinations in the MAP http://www.plymouthrockets.com/map2016/ database??? We are looking for the name of the place in which the two MAP destinations are located, as defined by the USPS.

For bonus credit: include the population of this SMALLEST place in your answer. I took that population number from Wikipedia, and as information professionals we know Wikipedia is never wrong, right? :) If you answer the bonus credit question correctly, you get to choose between one of the 11 black, special Kindle Fire tablets, and the 12th really, really special Kindle Fire tablet. The 12th tablet is really, really special because it is blue. Or maybe it is really, really special only if you like blue? Otherwise, it is identical to the other 11. Those are all black. And they are special. But I think I said that already.

The contest for that 12th, really, really special Kindle Fire tablet starts right now. Send your answer to me via email, preferably before anyone else does. I don't work weekends, so it is likely the winning library will not be announced until Monday.

Go!

Dear Library Director,

I am a donor to the library. I believe that libraries are vital to our community and that spending for our library is just too low. Is there an upcoming public meeting that I could attend to elaborate my views?

Thanks,

Melissa,

I received the message below today.  The sender's name in his/her email address and the same in the signature line were off by one letter.

Hi all--

I received this e-mail  yesterday.  Has any of you gotten something similar?  I can't find the writer as a resident of the district or the county and am wondering about motivation.

Thank you.

I wonder if the email many public libraries received has any connection to the request for documents made a while back by some supposedly non-profit organization.

Well, I just received this a few minutes ago.  Does your sender have the initials CP?  Curious.
