Innovative Ways to Promote the Census

The 2020 U.S. Census is underway and more households across America are responding every day. Over 70 million households have already responded–that’s nearly half the country!

In the 2010 census, children under four were the most likely age group to go uncounted, with an estimated 2.2 million young children missing, resulting in fewer resources for their communities over the past decade.

Let’s make sure we count all kids in 2020!

As a trusted voice in communities, Head Start plays an important role in spreading the word about the importance of filling out the census. With many census promotion measures moved online due to COVID-19, it’s particularly important to find ways to reach families who may not have digital access. How about placing printed materials in students’ grab-and-go lunch bags?

Check out this blog from the National Count All Kids Committee for innovative ways that early education advocates like you can promote the 2020 census right now.

Still have centers open? Head Start California has also done an amazing job of ensuring every kid is counted by setting up tablets in the lobbies of Head Start programs that are still open to serve essential workers, so that when parents come in to drop off their children, they can answer the census online.
