Job Title:  Library Director

 

Reports to:  Board of Trustees

 

Location:  Farmington Community Library, Michigan

 

Farmington Community Library is located in Oakland County and as a district library it serves two communities and 90,000 residents. An eight member governing Board of Trustees, appointed by the two communities the library serves, is seeking a dynamic and innovative Director who will continue to build on the exemplary reputation the library has in its community. The community supports a 6.6 million annual operating budget, and has an active Friends of the Library group which contributes to programming and collection materials.

 

Job Responsibilities:

Supervise Branch and Departmental Heads, as well as Administration.

Reports to Library Board, establishes and maintains effective working relationship with staff, Library Board, local government officials, the general public and peers in the library field.

Prepares and presents annual budget, assures all fiscal accounts are in good order, assures all internal controls are followed, authorizes all payables for Board approval and payment, monitors payroll, oversees care of all fixed assets and works with auditors to verify compliance with laws and Board policy.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited institution.

Certification as a Professional Librarian Level 1 from the Library of Michigan.

Five (5) years of progressively responsible library experience, including at least five (5) years of library, financial and budgeting, legal, and human resources administrative responsibility.  Additional education may be substituted for experience.  Must have strong budgeting experience/background.

Ability to convey, for purposes of training staff, the basic principles, concepts and methodology of professional librarianship in carrying out assignments, operations and procedures.

Highly developed verbal and written communication skills, social skills and adaptability.

Visionary regarding library trends, the impact of changing information technology and the amount of acceptable risk the Board is willing to take in implementing new ideas and new technology.  Ability to process information effectively to learn new material, handle complex concepts, consider issues and to multi-task.

 

Physical Activities Required:

Degree of physical demands:

Light work:  exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

          Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work.

 

Compensation:

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
