Job Posting: Continuing Education Cataloging II Instructor

Continuing Education and Professional Learning Services at the iSchool at UW-Madison is seeking an instructor for Cataloging II, an advanced cataloging course for learners familiar with the concepts covered in Basics of Cataloging. This is an asynchronous online continuing education course. The previous iteration of Cataloging II was 6 weeks, but we are looking to expand it to an 8 week course if possible. The instructor will begin teaching in the spring of 2027 - the course dates are somewhat flexible pending the instructor’s availability. The iSchool will provide training and technical support for the instructor. Familiarity with online teaching or learning is an asset, but not required. The iSchool uses Canvas as our learning management system.

Ideal candidates:

At minimum, must hold a Bachelor’s degree;
Able to develop and teach the course during spring 2027 semester
Well-versed in the required content topics covered in the course (outlined below);
Legally authorized to work in the United States;
Experience with instruction is preferred, but not required.

Required Content for Cataloging II

Reading and understanding MARC catalog records
Distinguishing between copy cataloging and original cataloging, and creating original catalog records using MARC formatting
Evaluating current standards and practices of cataloging by learning to think critically about the ethics of cataloging, classification, and metadata
Cataloging Library of Things and other unique materials
Understanding how technology like AI and linked data and recent legislation affect modern cataloging

Salary: The instructor will receive up to $2,200 each time they teach the course. The instructor will receive an additional one-time development payment up to $880.
