ALA, in collaboration with the Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University, invites public libraries to apply for Media Literacy @ Your Library, a pilot program that will train library workers to help their adult patrons become better news consumers.
In this six-month learning and prototyping project, ALA and the Center for News Literacy will work with teams from five public libraries to adapt existing media literacy training materials to serve the needs of public librarians and the communities they serve.
The cohort teams will attend an in-person training and use their skills to conduct related adult public programs in their communities. Team members will also provide feedback on the training and serve as advisers to, and beta testers for, the development of
a corresponding web-based curriculum for the library field.

Selected libraries will receive:
* An intensive six-month experience that will include training and support for a three-person library team to develop and implement media literacy programming for adult patrons.

* In-person media literacy workshop training, to be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, in Chicago.
* Two nights? hotel lodging and some meals at the in-person workshop for three library representatives. (Note that travel costs to Chicago are at the library?s expense or must be paid from the $1,500 stipend.)
* Communications support, access to a community of practice, and technical and programming support.
Media Literacy @ Your Library is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Democracy Fund and the Rita Allen Foundation. The project is administered by ALA?s Public Programs Office.

Resource & Collections Strategy Services
This position will lead and coordinate the identification, negotiation, acquisition, renewal, and payment of all library information resources. The Assistant Library Director II manages the acquisition lifecycle for all formats of materials, oversees Interlibrary
Loan, and holds ultimate responsibility to manage e-resources, including maintaining access and communicating changes with the broader university. Working collaboratively with the Subject Liaisons, the Collection Development Team, and the Libraries Business
Affairs Office, the Assistant Library Director II will create and manage a collections budget of approximately $10 million dollars. The successful candidate will supervise 4 FTE support staff members. The Assistant Library Director II demonstrates a strong
commitment to customer service and a forward-thinking approach to resource acquisition and management. This position plays a key role in relationships with vendors, the University Office of General Counsel!
, consortia, subject liaisons, and the University Libraries' Business Office. This position reports to the Director for Resource & Collections Strategy Services. The full breadth of the position's responsibilities remains flexible and adaptable to new and
emerging staffing models, schedules, and technologies.
This position supports the Wayne State University mission to create and advance knowledge, prepare a diverse student body to thrive, and positively impact local and global communities. Wayne State students, staff, and faculty strive to overcome historical

Essential Functions:
Oversee and manage materials budget of approximately $10 million dollars;
Supervise four (4) support staff members in both Acquisitions and Interlibrary Loan;
Negotiate pricing, licensing, and access terms for electronic resources with vendors; serve as primary contact for collection-related products, services, and user requests for materials;
Provide leadership and direct oversight for trialing, licensing, acquisition, registration, activation, and troubleshooting of all commercial content in digital form;
Chair the Collection Development Team;
Collaborate with the AD for Discovery Services and Resource & Collections Strategy team members to ensure timely access to electronic resources via the local catalog, A-Z lists, link resolver, Summon, etc;
Collaborate with Coordinator for Assessment to identify value in subscription packages;
Oversee ordering, receiving, and processing of invoices for tangible materials in the collections;
Collaborate with the Office of Business Affairs in the annual audit of library material expenditures and year-end roll-over;
Coordinate annual renewal processes for print and electronic journals; and
Implement the University Libraries' goals and objectives as they pertain to the acquisition of library materials. In particular, support the University Libraries' commitment to providing collections that support the curriculum, research, and scholarship.
Qualifications:
MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution;
Minimum 3 years of experience acquiring, licensing, and managing the lifecycle of scholarly e-resources;
Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate the acquisition and licensing of scholarly resources;
Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of scholarly e-resources in a complex publishing environment;
Knowledge of current issues in acquiring, licensing, and managing scholarly resources.
Proven record of collaborative problem solving and facilitating cross-organizational cooperation in service of user needs;
Demonstrated ability to set priorities, exercise flexibility in meeting objectives, and effectively manage multiple projects and assignments;
Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues; and
Exceptional attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of progressively responsible acquisitions and licensing experience in an academic library;
Experience with Proquest Intota ERM;
Supervising in a unionized environment;
Experience with the Innovative Millennium acquisition module and
Experience with the Atlas Illiad Interlibrary Loan system.

Ploud is designed for small and rural libraries, provided by vendor Enfold Systems and subsidized with Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) dollars through the LM. Over 100 Michigan libraries utilize Ploud for their websites. Are you thinking about changing

Michigan Ploud libraries will pay $200 this year. For that low cost libraries are able to take advantage of one of four templates, each of which comes with between four and a dozen color schemes that can be changed at any time; hosting; a vendor-provided help
desk; and on-going development. A subdomain of "michlibrary.org" such as "MYLIBRARY.michlibrary.org" is available to new libraries or you are free to use your own domain name.
And there's no uploading HTML files with Ploud. In fact, you don't need to know any HTML at all. You simply log onto your site and from there you can edit text, images and links from an easy-to-use interface that requires no coding. Ploud is great for libraries
without specialized technology staff.
Ploud comes with carousels, or rotating images, which you can use on any page; optional drag and drop page layouts; a selection of MeL databases which can easily be extended for your patron base; an intuitive calendar for library events; a News section; a Kids
& Teens area; and a Contact Us form. From there you can develop any new content that you'd like. Your Ploud website can be as small or as large as you care to build it.

Good morning, everyone -
John French from the MSU Abrams Planetarium gave a fascinating presentation
at our library last night. He had a multifaceted program, enthusiastically
presenting wealth of information on the eclipse: what to do/not do in
viewing the eclipse; where to go to view it best; how to understand what is
actually happening.
He was engaging and got rave reviews from the audience, and he was also
generous enough to give away a number of free passes to the planetarium.
It is, of course, a bit late for programming before this eclipse, but I
highly recommend him for presentations exploring the topic of the solar
system and outer space. He was delightful.
