Public Comment on the Proposed School Librarian Preparation Standards
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) requests public comment on the Proposed School Librarian Preparation Standards. These proposed standards support goals 2 and 7 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic
Education Plan by defining the knowledge and skills that school librarians (an area of shortage relevant to credentialed staff in Michigan) should possess to support PreK-12 learners’ literacy development and inquiry skills across multiple disciplines of study.
The proposed standards would replace Michigan's current Standards for the Preparation of Teachers of Library Media, adopted by the State Board of Education (SBE) on March 13, 2012.
The proposed Standards for the Preparation of School Librarians were presented to the State Board of Education on January 9, 2024. A video of the meeting is available online at
Michigan State Board of Education Meeting for January 9, 2024 - Afternoon Session (youtube.com)
and the presentation begins at the 15:19 mark. The public comment period for these standards is now open through
March 10, 2024.
