It’s been an exciting summer for the Libraries Transform campaign! The ALA Executive Board extended the campaign for another three
years during ALA’s 2017 Annual Conference—we look forward to continuing our work with libraries and library advocates like you over the coming years. Thanks so much to everyone who has made the campaign such a success so far!
ALA Executive Board Extends Libraries Transform
Because of your success, the ALA Executive Board voted to extend its commitment to the campaign for another three years (through Aug. 31, 2020).
“The Executive Board is thrilled to extend the vital work of the Libraries Transform Campaign, which has become an essential part of the ALA’s efforts to
showcase the value and impact of libraries and library workers,” said Jim Neal, 2017-2018 ALA president and university librarian emeritus at Columbia University.

Leveling
the Field: Libraries and Income Inequality
Confronting
inequality is integral to the history of libraries and remains at the heart of library service today. The same materials, programs and services are available to anyone who walks through the library’s doors, no matter the size (or existence) of their wallet.
Yet librarians’ commitment to equity requires greater action, particularly during a sustained period of rising income inequality as we are experiencing in the United States. Across the country, in libraries of all types, librarians are taking that
extra step.

Your Favorite New Because Statement
Earlier this summer, we asked you to share ideas for new Libraries Transform Because statements—thanks to everyone
who participated!
There were a lot of great Because statements, but there was a clear winner after all the votes were tallied: “Because building a better world starts with literacy,” submitted by Kristen Craig from the Hebron Branch at the Licking County Library in Ohio. Congratulations,
Kristen!
Additional Because statement ideas are always welcome; feel free to email us at campaign@ala.org any time. |
