Keynote: Emerging Technologies – Trends from CES and Beyond The CES show is one of the largest technology shows in the industry; it’s where companies from around the world release new products, unveil innovative ideas, and do hands-on demonstrations. Every year, Brian Pichman of the Evolve Project attends to speak to the exhibitors about libraries and their unlimited potential. This session shares his insights from the event in a jammed-pack session of tech gadgets and emerging technologies. Additionally, discover other potential technologies that are ready for your library to implement in its maker spaces and fab labs. Hear about other technologies libraries are recently starting to look into. Leave with lots of ideas, insights, and laughs. Speaker: Brian Pichman, Director of Strategic Innovation, Evolve Project Brian speaks a lot about innovative technology as a presenter and loves collaborating with both libraries and companies. He is dedicated to bring libraries into the future using cost effective measures and strategies. Much of Evolve’s work includes bridging the digital divide, breaking away from "traditional library views", becoming trend setters and finding or building innovative works geared towards interaction and collaboration. He has also been working with start-up companies across the country, promoting libraries and encouraging people to work closer with libraries in developing new ideas and concepts. Breakout Sessions Cybersecurity for Public Libraries: Striking a Balance Mary Shindell, Sales Manager, Merit Network, Ann Arbor, Michigan This presentation is intended to raise awareness of the cybersecurity threat to libraries and their patrons and to provide practical methods to reduce risk. We will share information regarding the need for security, including the what, when and how of typical threats and attacks. We will cite specific recent local and national breaches affecting libraries and education. Attendees will take away a free practical tool to implement at their library.<br> Gaming in the Library Michael McEvoy, Technology Coordinator, Northville District Library, Northville, Michigan Join us for a discussion of running wildly successful video gaming programs for your library. Three video game extraordinaires will discuss what video games they’ve used in programs, which gaming platforms they use and why, what patrons attend these programs (and not just kids?!?!). How much does this cost? How long is a given game title relevant for? Which games worked best? and why? What kind of attendance? Do the “gamers” come back for more Library events? Does playing video games help make tweens and teens into life long library patrons? You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers... and Video Games! No Assumptions: 10 Years of Open-Access 3D Printing in the Library Eric Maslowski, Director, UM3D Lab, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan 3D Printing is at the height of the Gartner Hype Cycle with many rushing to acquiring 3D Printers in the hope of empowering their user-base. However, 3D Printers have budgetary, support, health, and training considerations that can bring down the most hardened support systems. This session will provide attendees with candid and concrete examples of successes and failures around 3D Printing services while sharing a low-cost, sustainable, deployable, open-access service model suitable for Libraries and academic units. Windows 10 Kerry Sanders, School of Information Technology Chair, ITT Technical Institute, Canton, Michigan This session will start with an overview of Windows 10, and then explore the new enhancements, features and fixes to the operating system. Finally, Kerry will give us his recommendation for Windows 10 deployment. Tech Talk: Lending Devices/Electronics The final session of the day will feature a panel of library technology managers and specialists who will discuss current challenges and describe the approaches and solutions they are implementing in their libraries. Each member of the panel will have an opportunity to talk about electronic device lending opportunities that they have implemented in their library. Registration Forum check-in begins at 9 AM with the keynote speaker beginning at 9:30 AM. Continental breakfast , lunch and afternoon snack will be provided.
