ALA Youth Media Awards Webcast!

Are you ready?! Won’t be long now. The 2023 Youth Media Awards press conference is Monday, January 30, at 8:00 a.m. CT, during LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience in New Orleans. For those unable to join us in person, we are pleased to announce two virtual viewing options:

The ALA Youth Media Awards, including the Newbery, Coretta Scott King, Caldecott, Sibert, and Printz awards, are chosen by our colleagues and recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent. This year’s announcements include two ALA Affiliate Awards, the Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature and Sydney Taylor Book Award.  

Online or in New Orleans, we hope to see you there!

MiLibraryQuest: Winter 2023, an online event for teens throughout the state.  

The Quest will begin on February 1.  The theme will be Dungeons and Dragons.  Teens will solve riddles, participate in the quest, and enter for a chance to win a prize from their library. 

This is our 5th biannual Quest.  The format this time will be different from previous Quests.  Instead of clues on each library's website, the Quest will be housed primarily on the MiLibraryQuest website.  

The format change will make it even easier for your library to participate. All you need to do is:

1. sign up to participate (here) and 

2. award a prize to a teen from your library who participates (at the end of the Quest).

The prize can be anything you choose - a book, a gift card, a leftover Summer Reading prize, whatever you choose!

We will also provide publicity information.  How you choose to publicize the Quest - online, in your library, in your community - is up to you. 

It's a fun program for your teens with very little time commitment from you!

If you'd like to participate, please sign up here by Friday, January 13. All participating libraries are invited to our Zoom meeting next Wednesday afternoon (January 11) to see details of this Quest.  We will send the Zoom link to all libraries who sign up.  If you have any questions in the meantime, please let us know at milibraryquest@gmail.com.

YALSA's 2023 Young Adult Services Symposium - SAVE-THE-DATE

The 2023 Young Adult Services Symposium will be held Friday, November 10 through Sunday, November 12 at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis Arch in St. Louis, MO. The room rate for the Symposium attendees is $149 a night plus state and local taxes. Ready to Read Michigan goals are to equip public library staff with information, skills, and tools needed for them to promote early literacy in their community and to engage families using the 5 practices of Every Child Ready to Read. In this 90 minute webinar, Jen will:

• Share basic early childhood brain science to help you make the connection between Storytime activities and your young patron's growing brains.
• Review the Ready to Read Five Practices and give participants a plethora of program ideas for each of the five practices to use right away.
• Introduce a Template that will help you include the five practices in your Storytime plans.
• Discuss our role as Language and Literacy Mentors for parents and caregivers.
• Present ideas for collaborating with Community Partners for Storytime along with ways to share resources that will help families with young children.

Attend either date above and bring your summer program ideas, no matter the age group to share at our virtual round tables. Participants are encouraged to bring at least one program idea to share with the group. Program ideas may or may not be related to the CSLP theme "All Together Now," and can be geared for any age, including teens & adults. We want to hear what your library is up to and what you're excited about! We will also have the opportunity to discover all of the exciting ways the Michigan Learning Channel (MLC) and PBS Kids can support engagement and learning in your community this summer. See a sampling of the MLC summer program resources, including specific All Together Now themed activities and resources, on-demand videos and hands-on activities from a variety of local, regional, and national educational partners, and ideas for in-person events and programming provided by the MLC engagement team.
Attendees of this round table will walk away with ideas and contacts to customize the summer program for your community. These virtual round tables will not be recorded.

The Detroit Zoological Society is excited to partner with libraries again on another summer of reading! During this workshop, you'll receive activity outlines that give an animal twist to the "All Together Now" theme. From exploring animal group names to thinking about the global efforts of conservation, each activity is designed to help learners think about how we all are part of one biosphere.
