We are seeking an energetic, team-oriented person to fill a Library 1 position in the Talking Book Library at the Main Library.  Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Public Service, the person in this position will be responsible for supporting TBL functions by performing both para-professional library work and outreach.   Please see the attached job description for full details.  Evening and weekend hours are required.

 

Wage Range:  19.73 - $25.97 in annual wage steps according to current union                           contract

Job Description

 

Job Title:             Librarian I

Department:      Talking Book Library

Reports to:         Asst. Director for Public Service

Effective date:    November 14, 2017

 

SUMMARY

Perform professional and para-professional library work and outreach to seniors and the visually impaired involving a variety of clerical and other library activities and operations; to assist the public; and to perform related work as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Asst. Director for Public Service.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

An employee in this position will be required to assist in the operation of the Talking Book Library by performing any or all of the following essential duties and others as assigned.

 

        Schedule and present at outreach events throughout TBL’s eight counties;

        Assist patrons and their caretakers in registering for and using the TBL service through the National Library Service;

        Assist patrons and their caregivers in using online services and tools for the visually impaired including BARD and the NLS player;

        In conjunction with the State Braille and Talking Book Library, update patron and organizational accounts for TBL territory;

        Provide training and support for partner libraries;

        Be responsible for displays, brochures, bookmarks and book columns;

        Assist with general library reference and readers’ advisory services;

        Develop  library programming as required;

        Represent TBL at quarterly sub-regional meetings in Lansing and other events for the visually impaired; and 

        Perform related library and clerical work as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

REQUIRED:  Considerable knowledge of library procedures, policies, practices and methods;

REQUIRED:  Ability to work effectively with general public and other employees;

REQUIRED:  Understanding of senior and visually impaired needs and limitations

REQUIRED:  Skill in the use of computers;

REQUIRED:  Ability to communicate effectively;

REQUIRED:  Willingness and ability to work at other locations as required.

 

EDUCATION

REQUIRED:  Master’s Degree in Library Science or equivalent ALA Accredited degree.

 

EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED:    Two years of work in a library setting.

REQUIRED:    Level I or II State of Michigan Professional Librarian’s Certificate.
