Vicksburg District
Library is seeking applicants for the position of Youth Services Librarian.
Hours:
30 hours per week
Pay and Compensation:
$19-21/hour depending on experience and qualifications. Sick leave is earned on a monthly
basis and becomes available after 30 days of employment. Vacation time becomes available
after one year of employment and begins at one week of time.
Job Duties Include:
- Providing services in keeping with the American Library Association’s “Library Bill of Rights” statement.
- Planning and conducting programs for Babies and toddlers (ages 1-4 years) and preschool (ages
4-5); Children in grades 1-5 and Tweens in grades 6-8; Teens in grades 9-12.
- Helping children with reference questions, using computers, and suggesting titles.
- Educating children and teens in using library services.
- Preparing displays, hand-outs, bulletin boards, and other content as needed.
- Staying aware of current trends in librarianship to skillfully,
- Provide Collection Development including selecting books, audiobooks, and CDs for the Young Adult and Children’s collections. Recommending YA and Children's movie purchases to the
Director.
- Weed damaged/outdated materials which the library should no longer store.
- Enforcing library policies. Assisting at the Circulation Desk and in the building as necessary. Participating in the monthly staff meeting;
- Able to work some evenings/weekends in support of programming;
- Other duties as assigned by the Director.
Programming Duties Include:
- Succeeding at year-round planning and preparation.
- Adopting existing programming and creating new programs which serve the community.
- Conducting weekly programs for children and teens.
- Creating the annual seven week Summer Reading Program, which may include scheduling performers, generating activities, and hosting an End of Summer Reading Party.
- Promoting programs in the community. Coordinating with local schools to provide outreach programs in the school system.
Qualifications and Work Experience:
- Minimum of an Associate’s degree in a relevant field such as Public Education or Library and Information Science. Preferred Masters in Library and Information
Science with specialty in Youth Services or School Media.
- Substantial, demonstrated work experience serving children and/or young adults.
- General Qualifications:
- Must have computer, reading, and math skills to support duties specific to the job.
- Must be able to interact with the general public.
- Must enjoy and be skilled at working with children and teens.
- Must be creative and able to work independently or in a group
