Children’s Librarian

Part-time 15 hours per week

Hourly Children’s Librarian:

The St. Charles District Library is seeking an outgoing, people-oriented individual who is committed to children’s customer service and detail work.

Reports to Library Director.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

Oversees children’s services, which includes Young Adults.

 Plan and organize story times for children.

 Plan and organize reading programs for children and young adults.

 Select materials for the children’s collection using reviews from journals provided by the library.

 Weed children’s and young adult collections of outdated and worn materials at least once a year.

 Attend workshops and seminars on children’s and young adult services that will increase job skills.

 Participate in fund raising for children’s programs.

 Work with the schools to help provide study materials to students during the school year.

 Work with outside agencies in outreach programs, i.e. Headstart, School, and Migrant program, etc.

 Keep Director informed on needs of the children’s department.

 Provide Director with information needed for grant applications or for government surveys.

 Assist library patrons, this includes searches for materials in electronic or print formats.

 Assist other staff members as needed.

 Perform clerk duties as needed.

 

Required Knowledge, skills and abilities:

Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

Knowledge of library procedures, public service, Internet Resources and SirsiDynix Horizon is a plus.

 Flexible schedule capabilities are a must-weekend and evening work required.

 Ability to work well with other staff and patrons and good verbal communication skills are important.

 Be able to physically perform the duties assigned.

 Comply with the dress code.

 

Minimum education and experience:

High school diploma or equivalent with applicable library experience.

 Must attend beginner’s workshop.

 Must obtain a Certificate of Library Experience from the Library of Michigan.

 

This position pays at an hourly rate of $8.15. There are no benefits for this position.
