ALA News for October 31, 2017 NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ALA unveils shortlist for 2018 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction The American Library Association (ALA) has announced six books shortlisted for the esteemed Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, awarded for the previous year's best fiction and nonfiction books written for adult readers and published in the United States. ALA Announces $500,000 in First-time Grants to Develop Coding Programs in Libraries More than $500,000 in grants will be awarded to 28 libraries in 21 states plus the District of Columbia to design and implement coding programs for young people. The grants are part of ALA’s ongoing Libraries Ready to Code initiative sponsored by Google to promote computer science (CS) and computational thinking among youth.
