Courses to Help Develop, Diversify, and Weed Your Collections
As library staff continue to adapt to ever-evolving programming and services, it’s important to also tend to one of the library’s core offerings, the collections. Looking for
a place to start? Explore these featured courses and recorded webinar in the WebJunction Course Catalog to refresh or learn new skills to help manage the collections. These learning opportunities cover collection development basics, how to evaluate and diversify
a picture book collection, and the value and importance of weeding.

The Diverse BookFinder Collection Analysis Tool (CAT), is designed to help you diversify your picture book collection. This free, online resource allows you to upload a single
file and get a snapshot of WHO is (which racial/cultural groups are) represented—and how—in your collection.
The session includes a demonstration of how to use the CAT and the resulting report in combination with the Diverse BookFinder Search Tool to drive collection-based decisions. Finally, you'll learn more about the important role of library staff in carefully
reviewing books to build authentic and inclusive library collections that counter bias and promote cultural pluralism.

Looking to get started with understanding collection development? In this course, you will learn the definition of collection development, and the concepts of intellectual freedom
that inform collection development, as well as an outline of the collection development cycle and basic community needs assessment tools.

Mention collection development and most librarians think of the selection of new materials for the library. Weeding - removing library materials from your collection - is an
often forgotten, yet integral part of collection development. In this course you will first discover why that is true, and then learn the techniques of weeding, develop policies and avoid common pitfalls.

CFPB’s Your Money, Your Goals: Financial Empowerment for Your Community
3:00 PM–4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time
Whether you’re talking to patrons about Covid-19, searching for a job, going to college, or deciding where to live, money is often a key concern. Guiding patrons through a complicated financial
landscape, can be challenging and confusing, and can be unfair when the playing field is not level. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), is focused on using all of their tools, including enforcement, rule-writing, and research to address systemic
racism and economic inequality in the consumer financial system. One of the ways to address wealth inequality in the U.S. is through empowering people who are developing their financial knowledge. With the right tools and resources, you can start conversations
on this essential topic which touches all our lives.
The CFPB provides a comprehensive tool, Your
Money, Your Goals (YMYG). YMYG is a set of free financial empowerment materials for organizations that help people meet their financial goals by increasing their knowledge, skills, and resources. Join this session to explore resources you can use with
patrons working on their financial goals and hear from the Norfolk Public Library about how they are using YMYG resources to close the financial literacy gap in their community. And also learn about ALA’s Financial
Literacy Interest Group—a place to find support and share best practices for financial literacy in all libraries and communities.
Presented by: Cassie Russell, Training and Technical Assistance Consultant, ICF; Patricia Kendalls,
Adult Programming Coordinator, Norfolk Public Library (VA); Alex Gabriel, Information Technology Trainer, Norfolk Public Library (VA); Emily Mross, Business Librarian and Library Outreach Coordinator, Penn State Harrisburg Library, and Chair, RUSA Financial
Literacy Interest Group
