Job Classification:                        Part-time Museum Curator

Wage Rate:                                     $20.00/hr.   10-15 hours per week

Brief Description:

This part-time non-benefited position works under the direct supervision of the Library Director, and will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the City Museum known as the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum.  A copy of the complete job description is available at the City website www.scsmi.net.

Minimum Requirements:   

Applicants must possess knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of museum management obtained through the following:

A Bachelor’s Degree in History, Museum Studies or a related field.

OR

Equivalent experience, as determined by the Library Director, working in an educational or public service environment related to the operation of an historical museum.

Job Description

 TITLE:                       Museum Curator

REPORTS TO:        Library Director

 GENERAL SUMMARY:

 Under the general direction of the Library Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the City Museum known as the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.            In accordance with established policies, procedures and professional standards, plans and installs displays, exhibits and other interpretive programs within and on the grounds of the museum.

2.            Acts as curator and registrar for objects within the museum’s collection.

3.            Responsible for the preparation of press releases, flyers, notices and other public relations related materials.

4.            Plans, organizes, conducts, and supervises general and special tours, and a training program for and the scheduling of volunteer guides.

5.            Develops and coordinates educational programs in conjunction with local school curriculum.

6.            Assist with the researching, writing and implementation federal, state and local grants.

 Essential Qualifications, and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for Employment

 All of the following qualifications, and knowledge, skills and abilities are essential.  An employee in this class, upon date of application must possess the following:

             Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of museum management.

            Knowledge of Past Perfect and Autographics Montage software preferred.

            Ability to plan and prepare exhibits, displays and other interpretative programs.

            Ability to speak and write effectively in the English language.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with general public, volunteers and co-workers.

Required education and training

Possess a Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies or a related field from an accredited college or university, or, equivalent experience, as determined by the Library Director, working in an educational or public service environment related to the operation of an historical museum.
