With thanks and appreciation to those who have served, this month we would like to feature the many resources in the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) available to those interested in military service—both past and present.

Preparing for the Military

Many organizations that provide professional development to educators utilize the video clips from Today’s Military to identify the enlistment requirements and the many career paths available. These inform us that the military is about so much more than just combat. To supplement Today’s Military video clips such as the one on taking the ASVAB, LearningExpress Library from MeL has the 6^th Edition ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Complete Test Preparation eBook. This text, updated in 2022, offers complete test planning, including knowing the score you need for the job you want; Assembling Objects, Auto and Shop, Electronics, Math, Mechanical, Science and Word Knowledge Reviews; and 4 separate practice tests. To access this eBook and many other ASVAB-related items, explore the Career Exploration Center from LearningExpress Library.

The eBook High School Collection also offers many titles to help students better understand the unique operations and daily living experiences in the various branches of the military. A few of these include the Life in the Military series and Military Drones. In the eBook Public Library Collection, younger readers can find and appreciate Parents Here and There: A Kids Guide to Deployment.

Veterans & Military History Enthusiasts

Using the search terms military and veteran, the eBook Public Library Collection generates over 100 results on titles that contain the 2021 publications of The Veteran’s WORK Book: How to Transition Out of the Military and Get Hired! and Stories Are What Save Us: A Survivor’s Guide to Writing About Trauma. There are also biographies and memoirs available like War Flower: My Life After Iraq.

For those that stay current on all things military, MasterFILE Complete serves up many options. While keyword searches in this eResource can take you to a wide range of subjects, patrons also have direct access to many current publications such as Military Review, Infantry, Military History, Naval Aviation News, and Sea Power.

These resources are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to military content in MeL. Be sure and explore PebbleGo, Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints, and History Reference Center for even more military-related items.
