Dr. Stephen Bajjaly Steps Down As Associate Dean of SIS

After 11 years of service to the School of Information Sciences (SIS), Dr. Stephen Bajjaly has stepped down as Associate Dean. He will be on leave during the 2018-19 academic year and will return to teaching as a SIS faculty member in May 2019. He will remain active in library and information science education during this time as President Elect of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE)...

 

 

Christian-Jacob Johnson Joins SIS 

Christian-Jacob Johnson recently joined the SIS team as E-Learning Specialist. In this role, Christian provides support to SIS faculty and students as they use the various e-learning tools, including the new learning management system, Canvas. Christian assists and supports faculty with online course design, development and delivery. He also provides instruction and training to SIS faculty, staff and students.

 

Lunchtime Webinars Return!

The popular SIS Lunchtime Webinar series returns on September 26, 2018 at Noon EDT and will feature Wayne State University Archivist Alison Stankrauff (MLIS '02) as she discusses the university's 150th anniversary celebrations and the role of the University Archives. Student Updates

Shatha Baydoun completed the ALA Student-to-Staff program at ALA Annual Conference in July. She shared her experience in a recent guest blog post on the SIS blog.
Mattie Dugan and alumnus Nathaniel Arndts (MLIS '18) participated in a poster session at the ARCHIVES*RECORDS 2018 Conference in August. They shared their work on the Michigan Black History Bibliography Project. Read more details on the blog.

 

 

Faculty Updates

Hermina Anghelescu recently presented in Moldova. She was invited by the Japanese Embassy in Moldova to discuss her experiences as a guest professor and speaker in Japan.
Kafi Kumasi published a paper entitled “INFLO-mation: A Model for Exploring Information Behavior through Hip Hop" in the Journal of Research on Libraries & Young Adults 9(2018).
Professor Emeritus Ronald Powell has published a book chapter entitled "Research" in The Portable MLIS; Insights from the Experts.
Xiangmin Zhang published a paper entitled "User Perceived Learning From Interactive Searching On Big Medical Literature Data" in the journal of Big Data and Information Analytics.

 

 

Alumni Updates

Liz Breed (MLIS '02) has been named the Michigan eLibrary Coordinator at the Library of Michigan. 
Mary Galvin (MLIS '94) was recently named the July 2018 Member of the Month by the University Libraries Section of ACRL. 
Alison Stankrauff (MLIS '02) recently published two articles, “A Sesquicentennial Bibliography of Wayne State University Records from the University Archives at The Walter P. Reuther Library” in the Michigan Historical Review and Teaching the Teacher: Primary Source Instruction in North American Archives Graduate Programs” in American Archivist.
Sandra Svoboda (MLIS '17), Special Assignments Manager for WDET 101.9 FM, has been leading a series of panel discussions at libraries throughout Metro Detroit. The series focuses on fake news, fact-checking, online scams, and more. SIS will be a panel location in October.
