Hello Stephanie and the michlib-l community,

There is a webinar that was done recently by Anne Seurynck of Foster Swift in Grand Rapids.  She is the lawyer in the state who knows the most about library law, now that Dick Butler has retired.  The Michigan Cooperative Directors Association (MCDA at http://micoops.info/) sponsors statewide webinars at no cost and they are archived on this site:  http://mmll.org/workshops.html - scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page for the link to the archived webinar on district library establishment.

The Friends of Michigan Libraries (http://foml.org/) has a Trustee Alliance (http://fomltrusteealliance.org/) and I would suggest you contact them for information on a potential consultant.  If you think of it, please let the library community know who you found and your progress!  We have several libraries in our cooperative that have district formation on their radar.  It seems overwhelming, but it is totally worth it, IMHO.

Greetings everyone -

I am hoping the collective at Michlib-L will provide some excellent recommendations as you all have in the past for so many queries.   I'm looking for recommendations for consultants who can come provide information and guidance on what it takes to become a district library.  We are specifically looking for someone who is skilled at getting parties who might be hesitant about the idea engaged in the process.  We want a thorough discussion of the steps involved, timeline, and pros and cons.

Many thanks in advance for your wisdom and advice,

Stephanie Masin
