Hello , I am a librarian at Canton Public Library and also a member of of the Michigan Alliance for Cultural Accessibility<https://www.miculturalaccess.org/professional-development> <https://www.miculturalaccess.org/professional-development> (MACA). Last week MACA featured speaker Alayna Lail from the Division on Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing, (DODDBHH) in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights who presented on this very topic! The quick response is that any ASL interpreter offered as accommodation must be a qualified ASL interpreter<https://adata.org/factsheet/sign-language-interpreters> according to ADA Title III requirements. We had asked about having a staff member who is fluent or semi-fluent provide translation and while Alayna mentioned that some access is better than no access, that this did not equate to compliance under ADA, I highly recommend checking out the provided links or contacting DODDBHH directly with specific questions as they are marvelous and can help connect you with resources to meet patron needs and requests. I also recommend joining MACA<https://www.miculturalaccess.org/> as we offer several valuable trainings and a network of cultural institutions to connect with (AND its very library budget friendly to join!) If your library does this, please contact me off list so I can find out more information to specific questions I have. Thank you so much!
