The City of Sterling Heights is seeking Substitute Librarians to support the operations of the Sterling Heights Public Library! Under supervision of the Public Services Area Coordinator, this position is responsible for reference and readers advisory services, instruction in the use of the library and its resources, and assisting with programming as needed.  There is no set schedule associated with the Substitute Librarian and hours vary based on need.

 

Essential Functions

• Provides information, reference, and referral services in Adult and Youth Services.
• Provides instruction in the use of print and digital resources.
• Assists with programming as needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications

• Masters Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA college or university.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Physical strength and dexterity to handle materials and boxes up to 25 pounds in weight and to transport loaded book carts.
• Ability to work as needed during the library’s regular hours: Monday – Thursday 8:30am-8pm; Friday 1-5pm; Saturday 9:30am-5pm; Sundays 1-5pm (during the school year)
• Knowledge of online databases, reference resources, and public computer applications to assist the general public.
• Experience with the Polaris LEAP automation system.
• Knowledge of popular reading trends.
• Knowledge of tablet and/or mobile devices used for accessing Overdrive, Hoopla, and other digital services.
