We have had a mask mandate from the time we reopened. Plenty of signage , a sandwich board outside stating occupancy limits & mask mandate, the msg on our phone with our hours and that masks have to be worn, disposable masks available on our bulletin board in the library. Prior to reopening to the public, this was also posted on all our social media.

Although we’re a class IV library, we are a smaller library. If anyone comes in without a mask, circulation or another staff member will stop  them. If they cannot or wish not to wear a mask, they’re informed that while they cannot be in the library without a mask, we would be happy to bring materials out to their car.

This also applies to any repair person or our auditors when they came in.

Surprisingly, we’ve had only 2 people question this & it went no further. In the beginning, we were prepared to have a staff person at the door at all times & that never happened. My library board has been fully supportive &, if there was an issue I or staff couldn’t resolve, we were to give the complainant the board president’s contact.

To those suggesting a mask mandate in lieu of moving back to restricted building access: How would you plan on enforcing such a mandate? Would this be something you would actively approach patrons about if they were maskless?

Thanks.

I am hoping to do the same (mask mandate, no closure), but will need to ok this with a somewhat reluctant board.

Good luck, all!

I am opting for a mask mandate instead of reverting back to curbside.  Probably until the end of the month, but we are a small library so it shouldn't be a problem for us.

I just saw that.  We have it as a response scenario in case we have a large portion (about 40%+) out in quarantine, paired with reduced hours so we don't burn out the others.  But, as of right now (Tuesday, January 4 at 4pm), it's not an immediate option for us.  For comparison, our county is next to Kalamazoo County, but our most recent figures have us at 16% positivity.

I know Kalamazoo libraries are going to curbside only with this latest wave of Covid. Are any other libraries considering this -- especially in SE MI?
