POSITION TITLE:    Reference Librarian

CLASSIFICATION:   Librarian (F.T. – 40 hours)

REPORTS TO:         Deputy Director

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Reference Librarians provide exceptional customer service, ensuring the Library remains an inclusive community hub. They also play a pivotal role in advancing the Library's strategic goals by creating engaging programs, services, and resource offerings.

 

ILLUSTRATION OF COMMON LIBRARIAN DUTIES

1.      Provides reference services, imparts information literacy instruction, facilitates collection and eCollection access, and offers readers' advisory assistance.

2.      Delivers outstanding customer service and exhibits a high level of professional conduct in all interactions with guests and colleagues.

3.      Applies library policies and procedures with expertise and proficiency.

4.      Responsible for opening and closing procedures, handling emergencies, and providing oversight of the public areas when on scheduled desk shifts.

5.      Designs, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of programs and services.

6.      Assists guests with operations of library equipment.

7.      Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

 

ILLUSTRATION OF UNIQUE KEY DUTIES

1.         Creates and implements programming, including author visits and topical programs.

2.         Performs collection development and maintenance of assigned collection.

3.         Assists patrons through one-on-one librarian service.

4.         Oversees services to book clubs.

5.         Researches and implements new library services and products.

 

STARTING SALARY: $42,972

 

HOURS: Some evening and weekend hours.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1.     Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university required.

2.     Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited library school preferred.

3.     Eligibility for appropriate Michigan Library certificate.

4.     Proficiency in a second language preferred.
