The Historical Society of Michigan’s (HSM) founders, Lewis Cass and Henry Schoolcraft, have joined the party and are busy celebrating our 190th birthday weekend. Join us!

 

HSM was founded on June 23, 1828, to facilitate the growth and restoration of Michigan’s history. We’re still kicking to this day with educational programming, conferences, bus tours, magazines, publications, and more…but we would not be here today without the support of our members and followers. Join in on our birthday fun with special discounts on memberships, a fun-themed donation of $1.90 toward our mortgage, or a larger donation of $190 that includes a gift of a specialty Historic Michigan map. As a nonprofit, HSM is often left with the daunting task of allocating funds for various programming and resources, and our mortgage is a constant drain on our funds. 1968

The year of the Detroit Tigers,

and our 140th birthday!

 

 

Fifty years ago, in 1968, HSM turned 140 years old and cheered as our beloved Detroit Tigers won the baseball world championship by making a dramatic comeback to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals.

1908

The Model T Ford,

and HSM’s 80th birthday!

 

In 1908, Henry Ford manufactured his first Model T. HSM was then a sprightly 80 years old. Today, we still drive awareness of Michigan history without any state government funding.

1828

Michigan Territory establishes Territorial Capitol,

HSM’s first birthday

 

In the same year we were founded, the territory of Michigan (not yet a state) built the Territorial Capitol building in Detroit for a cost of $24,500. It takes a lot more than that these days for the Historical Society of Michigan to keep the state’s history alive through its Michigan History magazine and statewide history conferences.
