Michigan Yearbook Collection Project - One-Year Update

The Library of Michigan has reached the one-year milestone of our Michigan Yearbook Collection Project campaign. Since the campaign began in August 2024, we have been contacted by libraries, schools, historical organizations, and hundreds of private donors. Sometimes, the donations arrive in the form of several boxes. In most cases, a donor will mail or drop off anywhere from one to four yearbooks. These are often the donor’s own yearbooks or those of a close family member who has passed away.

Donations have come from across Michigan as well as from other states throughout the country. No matter how they reach us, we are deeply grateful for the generous response we have received. Over 3,000 yearbooks have been donated to the Library of Michigan since the campaign began last year. Each yearbook represents the stories of the individuals chronicled within them and of communities throughout our state. Thank you to everyone who has donated yearbooks and helped spread the word about the campaign.

2025 National Book Festival

Library of Michigan staff will soon be traveling to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. to represent Michigan at the National Book Festival on Saturday, September 6. The National Book Festival is an annual literary event organized by the Library of Congress that celebrates books, reading, and authors from across the United States and around the world. It features author talks, book signings, panel discussions, and activities for readers of all ages. The festival promotes literacy and fosters a love of reading through direct engagement with writers and their works.

For anyone who wants to connect with the festival, but cannot go in-person, a selection of programs will be livestreamed online, and videos of all programs will be available shortly after the festival. To see a full schedule of activities, visit the National Book Festival website at: https://www.loc.gov/events/2025-national-book-festival

2025-2026 Michigan Author Award Nominations - Final Day for Submissions

The Library of Michigan and Michigan Center for the Book are seeking nominations for the 2025-2026 Michigan Author Award. The award recognizes an outstanding published body of literary work by an author who is either from Michigan or has substantial ties to Michigan. The Michigan Author Award was established in 1992 with the intention of recognizing significant Michigan authors with a lifetime achievement award. Over the years, the award has been given to a diverse collection of writers working in a variety of genres and styles. A panel of judges representing the Library of Michigan and Michigan Center for the Book determines the recipient on overall literary merit.

Visit Michigan.gov/MIAuthorAward for the nomination form, the criteria for nomination eligibility, and a list of past Michigan Author Award recipients. Applications must be submitted by Friday, August 29, 2025. Direct all questions about the Michigan Author Award to 517-335-1477 or Librarian@Michigan.gov.
