Part-Time Outreach Services Librarian II

POSITION:                         Outreach Services Librarian II (.5 FTE, 20 hours per week)

                                            

NATURE OF WORK:

Under the direction of the Head of Outreach Services, fulfills typical duties which may include, but are not limited to:

·        Delivery of reference, information and reader’s advisory services for library patrons of all ages.

·        Assists patrons in use of computers and other library technology.

·        Plans, promotes, implements and evaluates storytimes and other library programs.

·        Develops, maintains and promotes library collections.

·        Serves on library-wide committees and participates in school outreach activities.

·        Contributes to the smooth operation of the Navigator bookmobile and YDL – Superior Township.

·        Other responsibilities may include assignment to subject or service specialty areas. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·        Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited institution. 

·        Must be eligible for certification according to Library of Michigan personnel standards.

·        Knowledge of child development and literacy.

·        Experience working with diverse populations.

·        Knowledge of computers, Internet and emerging technologies.

·        Demonstrated understanding of philosophies, techniques, and trends in public library service.

                             

HOURS:                             

Part-time, 20 hours per week (including regularly scheduled evenings and weekends).

 

SALARY/BENEFITS:

                                      Hourly wage starting at $18.63.  Pro-rated paid time off and paid holidays.  Employer paid retirement contribution after one year of service. This position is part of the AFSCME union bargaining unit.

·        Bachelor’s Degree.  Public library experience preferred.

·        Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

·        Ability to function in a professional manner, work independently, and use good judgment.

Para-professional duties as assigned by Michigan Avenue Branch Manager.  Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:

·        Supports delivery of reference, information, and reader’s advisory services for library patrons of all ages.

·        Assists patrons in use of computers and other library technology.

·        Participates in library program planning and implementation for youth.

·        Assists with collection development projects.

·        Contributes to the smooth operation of the Michigan Avenue Youth Department.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·        Bachelor’s Degree.  Formal training in a child-related field or experience working with youth desired.

·        Demonstrated ability to work with families and youth from diverse populations.

·        Proficiency in using computers and Internet.

·        Strong desire to engage children birth-18, their parents, caregivers and teachers.

·        Knowledge of children’s literature, information resources, and child and adolescent development concepts desired.

                             

HOURS:                             

Part-time, 20 hours per week (including regularly scheduled evenings and weekends).
