DIRECTOR
BRIGHTON
(MI) DISTRICT LIBRARY
If
you believe the library should
be the heart of the community, then you may be the right
person to serve as
Director of the Brighton (MI) District Library! Due to the
retirement of the
current director, the Board of Trustees is seeking an
experienced administrator
with a proven record of financial and personnel management,
and who is
committed to a collaborative, collegial approach. The successful
candidate will be an energetic
and dedicated professional, well-versed in current and
emerging trends and best
practices in library services.
Still
retaining the charm of a small town, Brighton offers the
amenities
of “big city“ life, including a variety of housing options,
an excellent school
system, access to higher education opportunities, numerous
cultural
attractions, and beautiful recreation areas.
Brighton is located in a growing area of southeast
Michigan, within easy
driving distance of Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Lansing. As
evidenced by the recent passage of a millage levy with 72%
approval, the
library enjoys outstanding community support.
BDL serves a population of 43,000 with a budget of
just over $2 million
and a staff of 65 (20 MLIS) who take pride in providing
excellent customer

Position
requirements: A
graduate degree in
Library and Information Science from a program accredited by
the American
Library Association; a minimum of seven (7) years of
post-degree employment in
a public library, of which at least four (4) years have been
as an executive or
senior manager; possession of, or the ability to obtain upon
hire, a Level I
Michigan professional certificate; a comprehensive knowledge
of public library
management and fiscal practices; experience with budget
management of
comparable size and complexity; excellent interpersonal and
human resource
abilities; experience in library renovation projects; and a
proven record of
leadership.
Additional requirements include strong
verbal and written
communication skills; the ability to develop and articulate
a vision for
library service and inspire others; a thorough understanding
of library
technology and its applications; and a collaborative style
that will continue
the library’s tradition of a teamwork environment. Experience in district
library management would
be a plus.

Compensation:
from the low $70s, dependent on qualifications and
experience;
benefit package that includes: health & life insurance,
deferred
compensation & retirement option.
