Oxford Public Library Millage Failed 3367-Yes to 3612-No (245) This was OPL's third attempt in three years to pass a .4518 Headlee Override. It failed first in August of 2012, also in August 2014, and again last night. The last increase in funding for the library was nearly 20-years ago. We were ahead at one point in the evening giving us some hope-but absentee ballots are what ultimately took us out in the end. Unlike our previous attempts-we had a strong campaign committee, but the editor of our local newspaper continues to run his own anti-campaign using his editorial column as his outlet. We were the only funding request on the ballot that failed locally. We shared the ballot with police and fire/ems, both of which were rather substantial requests in comparison to what we were asking our voters to support. Subsequently we were also the only item on the ballot that the local newspaper strongly encouraged voters to vote "NO" on. Sort of mindboggling, isn't it? Change is inevitable-so we will be making changes to our operations, plan of service and service hours beginning January 1, 2015. As a courtesy, outside of Michlib-l we will notify our neighboring communities of those changes shortly. Regards, Bryan J.
