Subject: Public servants can apply for Federal Student Loan forgiveness

Did you know that as a State of Michigan employee you may qualify for federal student loan forgiveness?

For a limited time, the U.S. Department of Education is offering public employees working in government and eligible nonprofits a second chance to qualify for student loan forgiveness.

Visit the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Help Tool to check if you qualify for forgiveness with this federal program. An estimated 154,000 public servants in Michigan may be eligible for student loan debt relief. It only takes a few minutes to see if you’re one of them.

Who is Eligible?

Individuals who work a minimum of 30 hours a week on average for the government or a qualifying nonprofit for 10 years and make 120 student loan repayments on a federal direct loan in full and on time, the federal government will consider their loans “paid in full” and forgive the remaining balance.

How do I apply?

If you contact the MI HR Service Center at 877-766-6447, they can provide you a certified copy of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Employment Certification form with the employer's information and certification in sections 3 and 4 completed. After you receive the form from MI HR, you will need to complete and sign Sections 1 and 2 and submit the entire form to the U.S. Department of Education.

The deadline to submit a completed form to the federal government is Monday, Oct. 31. The Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Help Tool is a resource to help walk you through the application process.

After submitting an application and all the necessary documentation to the U.S. Department of Education, you will be notified if you qualify for loan forgiveness by the federal government.
