Re: New equity and social justice principle added to ALA  Code of Ethics

I stand by the long-overdue update to the ALA Code of Ethics. Our job as librarians is to uphold the truth, and the truth is that this county was founded on the oppression and subjugation of non-white people. This basic premise (proved beyond a shadow of a doubt through primary source materials and almost any history book) has impacted every subsequent generation that grows up or immigrates to America -- especially people of color but specifically Black and indigenous people.

In 2021, It blows me away that we continue to argue about it in libraries instead of doing something about it. Library workers and librarians are predominantly white. The statistics are staggering, and it's our collective problem to address and fix.

I'd also like to respectfully disagree with the idea that by acknowledging these basic truths about what people of color have endured in our communities, we are limiting the views of those on the opposite side of the aisle. This isn't about political ideologies. It's about the truth and facts. Libraries have historically catered to white communities much more than to Black ones. I encourage you all to read up on the history of segregation in public libraries.

Finally: I moved to Michigan from South Carolina two years ago. I live in Detroit but work in the suburbs. Southeast Michigan is far more segregated than anywhere I've visited or lived during my first 33 years of life in the South. I would love to see TLN create a committee or group to address this. It's something I would be happy to be a part of.

Thank you,

Megan Summers

No, there is no "agenda." This ninth addition to the code of ethics falls directly in line with EDI guidelines already set forth by the ALA, supported by MLA, and library institutions across the country. The groups singled out in this point are historically marginalized, their history has been censored, and their intrinsic identities - who they are BORN AS - make them targets for hate and abuse. Their very identities have been discussed to death and who they are has been deemed as less than which is unacceptable. This is not viewpoints and opinions. This is not about beliefs. These are people. People that are out patrons. The aspect about conduct is to prevent them from hateful conduct. I'd like to support Karyn Ruley's concerns about ALA's most recent addition to their Code of Ethics. Reading through the first eight principles, and into the first sentence of the ninth, there is a sense of the universal and of the common humanity we share with ourselves and our patrons. "...all library users", "...each library user's rights", and "...the inherent dignity and rights of every person", changes dramatically in tone with "dismantle systemic and individual biases" and "advance racial and social justice".

Absolutely this is worthy of discussion, and this is the place for it.

Part Two: Thursday, August 26, 11:00 am-1:00 pm PT / 1:00-3:00 pm CT

Libraries come in all shapes and sizes and each building is unique as the librarians that run them. You probably know exactly where everything is located, but what happens when you are unable to provide the answers? This two-part session will help you develop a tool that will be invaluable to staff and future employees. Part one will provide the foundation and tips to creating a building book for your library. In part two of the workshop, we will look at completed books, share insights, and discuss any obstacles or concerns with each other. Presented by Judy Calhoun, Regional Director, Southeast Arkansas Regional Library.

I would just like to point out that not only are our patrons a diverse population, but librarians and staff who work in our institutions are as well. When someone on this listserv claims that addressing systemic issues such as (but not limited to) unfair treatment based on race, gender, and sexuality is politically motivated, "marxist," and doesn't belong in libraries, you're sending a direct message to anyone who faces these issues and works in the library world that they do not belong as well. And you're saying that on a list for library staff across the entire state. This is damaging to the library institutions across the entire state, not just your personal library where you believe, rightfully or not, "nobody like that" works or lives there.

Libraries must be for everyone. Including the people whose identities have been forcefully politicised, marginalized, and ignored.

I'm proud to work in a library where all visitors are welcome and where we make our best effort to provide the services needed to all. I agree wholeheartedly with Kristin, Cindi, Jessica, Kristen, Amber, Suzy, James, Jake, and Meagan. Thank goodness there are libraries all across our wonderful state where we loudly and proudly celebrate diversity and inclusion by confronting the inequity and oppression that has and continues to exist in our world!

Libraries are the best!

Hi, all --

Announced a few days ago

ALA has added a 9th principle to the ALA Code of Ethics

We affirm the inherent dignity and rights of every person. We work to

recognize and dismantle systemic and individual biases; to confront

inequity and oppression; to enhance diversity and inclusion; and to advance

racial and social justice in our libraries, communities, profession, and

associations through awareness, advocacy, education, collaboration,

services, and allocation of resources and spaces.

Well said, Amber McLain.

I would also like to add,  "tolerance must go both ways" is just a dog whistle to allow proponents of hate speech to say whatever they want in the name of their "personal beliefs." There is no place for that type of conduct in a public library system. To denounce said conduct is in no way "bullying people into silence." I strenuously object to that mischaracterization of what we are discussing.

To truly be inclusive and diverse, we need to be willing to tolerate ALL opinions right? Even the 'far right' ideology that seems to be currently politically incorrect. Tolerance must go both ways, otherwise, we are also bullying people into silence.

I disagree. But that is because I've actually been the victim of someone trying to bully me to silence someone they suspected might engage in hate speech at my library. I firmly believe in someone's right to free speech and their right to use the library space as long as they abide by library rules and do not stop someone else from using the library.  We had someone (who is a very extreme person) rent our meeting room. His rental agreement had no mention of hate speech.  I was harassed in-person, on Facebook, through email, and at Board meetings, for at least a month because I was allowing this man to rent our space. I even mentioned ALA's information that we can not deny use of the space to someone based on their views, beliefs, or what we think they might say.  The harassment kept up, night, day, phone calls, Board pressure.

It honestly was about enough to make me look for another job.

Matt, spot on with pointing out the difference in the wording and tone concerning this ninth ethic. If the reaction of some on this listserv is any indication--discussion and questioning is not to be tolerated or allowed and has actually devolved to guessing someone's race based on their opinion. Egads!

ALA does not speak for all librarians just as the AMA does not speak for all medical physicians. I have watched ALA over the years change from a nonprofit promoting and advocating for libraries and librarians to a political advocacy group. No thanks.

There are no both sides to human rights and dealing with oppression. If worrying about protecting and advocating for our marginalized staff and patrons seems like an agenda to you, then that's because you're fortunate enough that those issues don't affect you. This shouldn't be an issue, this should be seen as a long overdue addition to our code of ethics.

This thread is a perfect example of the cycle of outrage of our society, where anything that changes even in the slightest to help those who have been/are collectively harmed it's suddenly some sort of agenda. As if the status quo, which has been perpetuated AT THEIR EXPENSE, isn't some agenda on its own.

If this addition to the code of ethics bothers you, then I am frankly glad, and I would hope it initiates some introspection about why looking out for our peers is such a problem for you.

Subject: [Michlib-l] Museums and Libraries Join Forces to Boost Vaccine Confidence

"Communities for Immunity" launches at a critical moment for the United States.

Museums and Libraries Join Forces to Boost Vaccine Confidence

IMLS, CDC, Key Library and Museum Organizations Launch “Communities for Immunity”

WASHINGTON, DC—The Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the American Library Association (ALA), and the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) today announced the launch of Communities for Immunity, an unprecedented partnership to boost COVID-19 vaccine confidence in communities across the United States.

This important project launches at a critical moment as the United States is experiencing both a surge in COVID-19 cases related to dangerous new coronavirus variants and an urgent need to dramatically increase vaccination rates. “Throughout the pandemic, our nation’s museums and libraries have supported their communities with critical educational and social services,” said Laura Lott, President and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums. “As community pillars and trusted messengers, they are well-positioned to help build trust in and overcome hesitation to the COVID-19 vaccines.”

“As we continue to see the Delta variant spread across the country, we must come together to fight health misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine — the best tool we have to defeat this virus,” said Dr. Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General. “Museums and libraries are the vaults that hold our knowledge and history. They educate us on the discoveries and blunders of our past. That’s the foundation upon which Communities for Immunity will equip the American people with accurate, reliable, science-based information. This partnership comes at a crucial time. We need more trusted messengers who let science lead, as they help Americans make informed health decisions for our families.”

“Access to information about vaccines and trusted messengers to effectively convey it locally is a matter of life and death. America’s 117,000 libraries provide both, serving communities at greatest risk of contracting the coronavirus and those most hesitant to receive the vaccine,” said Patty Wong, President of the American Library Association. “The American Library Association is proud to join the Communities for Immunity initiative to offer resources and funding to supercharge the capacity of our nation’s second responders.”

“There is a long history of partnering with museums, libraries, and science and technology organizations to promote health education in the U.S.,” said Judy M. Gantt, CDC Museum Director. “Through the Communities for Immunity partnership, museums and libraries are supporting CDC’s mission to prevent disease, injuries, and disability from COVID-19, while delivering fact-based information on the science of COVID-19 and helping build confidence in the vaccine.”

With support from the CDC and IMLS, ASTC will lead Communities for Immunity, which will provide funding to museums, libraries, science centers, and other cultural institutions to enhance vaccine confidence where it matters most: at the local level. Building on the many ways they have supported their communities during the pandemic, the partnership will activate museums and libraries to create and deliver evidence-driven materials and develop resources, programs, and approaches specifically designed to help museums and libraries engage diverse audiences in building trust in the COVID-19 vaccine.

This includes working in partnership with ASTC-member experts on science and community engagement. Museums and libraries will leverage resources and research available on vaccines and variants disseminated by IMLS’s research partnership with OCLC and Battelle, the Reopening Archives, Libraries, and Museums (REALM) project.

“Museums and libraries are defined by their commitment to serving their communities, and we are honored to support them in doing what they do best: engaging their communities in locally-resonant learning and action to tackle big challenges,” said Christofer Nelson, President and CEO of ASTC. “As an association committed to increasing understanding of—and engagement with—science and technology among all people, we know that now is the time to lean into helping our communities through the science-focused challenge of COVID-19.”

Additional organizations joining in the effort include the Association of African American Museums (AAAM), the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM), the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL), the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM), and the Urban Libraries Council (ULC). This national coalition of partners are creating a Community of Practice to develop and refine vaccine education resources that will be shared with the broader museum and library community.

Communities for Immunity builds on a number of earlier and ongoing efforts to activate engagement in vaccine confidence work, including REopening Archives, Libraries and Museums (REALM), a research partnership between OCLC, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Battelle; Vaccines & US, led by the Smithsonian and in collaboration with a range of partner organizations and individuals; Vaccinate with Confidence from the CDC; We Can Do This from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and the It’s Up to You campaign led by the Ad Council and COVID Collaborative.

Thank you, Journey, for stating this so eloquently and passionately. It
is not just our patrons that this mindset effects, but library staff as
well.
While I have always felt welcome in my library, this thread serves to
highlight that this is not universal in libraries across the State of
Michigan.

My existence is not political. This is a human rights issue, not a

If you're requiring someone to self-identify their language as hate speech in order to think it qualifies, then you're never going to find any.  Most hate-based groups rely on couched language and dog whistles in order to present a veneer of civility over their activities in order to try and frame themselves as holding reasonable viewpoints.  So no, I would imagine his rental agreement didn't have any mention of hate speech.  You can bet, however, that he did, in fact, "stop someone else from using the library."  Your community was watching, and it took note of how important it was to you that hatred and extremism have a place in your library.  There are plenty of people who wouldn't feel welcome after that.

I would be happy to provide the supporting documentation and data for why this is important. I recently did that research for Lakeland:

I agree there seems to be an agenda to that last part.
To truly be inclusive and diverse, we need to be willing to tolerate ALL opinions right? Even the 'far right' ideology that seems to be currently politically incorrect. Tolerance must go both ways, otherwise, we are also bullying people into silence.

Subject: [Michlib-l] Youth & Teen Services Updates

First up, a quick note to say CONGRATULATIONS on all your work (yes, I’m talking to you) this summer to pull off summer library programming, no matter what shape or what kind of reimagining it took! I have seen and heard so many wonderful success stories. As you wrap up your summer programs and start to gear up for Fall, take a moment to reflect on how far you have come this past year (and a half). I am so proud of how much libraries across Michigan have adapted, and how much care has gone into your work for all in your communities.  Thank you for all you do! #MiLibraries

Collaborative Summer Library Program’s Annual Survey
REMINDER:  Please complete this summer library program survey from the Collaborative Summer Library Program - even if you didn't use "Tails and Tales" this year!

CSLP has created a survey so they can better assess the usefulness of the materials offered by the program on a national level to better serve you, the CSLP membership!  (Did you know?  All Michigan public libraries are members of CSLP, even if your library opts not to use the slogan/artwork/manual, because LM covers your membership fees on a statewide level using IMLS/LSTA funds.)

The survey can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBq6Yof5mW1gGzDeHroUQ7h09MRZ94kEWQQYnytTgXIcmPyA/viewform

IMLS accepting grant proposals

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is now accepting proposals for the 2022 National Leadership Grants for Libraries and the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program. The National Leadership Grants for Libraries program supports “projects that address critical needs of the library and archives fields and have the potential to advance practice in these professions to strengthen library and archival services for the American public.”

The Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program supports “the development of a diverse workforce of librarians and archivists to better meet the information needs of communities being served. Program goals include recruiting, training, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce of library and archives professionals; developing faculty, library, and archives leaders by increasing the institutional capacity of libraries, archives, and of graduate programs related to library and information science; and enhancing the training and professional development of the library and archival workforce to meet the needs of their communities.”

The deadline for the preliminary proposals is September 24, 2021.

A free on-demand informational webinar will be available on the IMLS website.

Fostering an Antiracist Library Culture
September 2021

Details & link to register: https://www.libraryjournal.com/?event=equity-in-action-sept-2021

Library staff at all levels within their organizations have the power—and the responsibility—to help cultivate an antiracist culture, from evaluating spaces, programs, services, and collections to examining policies and practices to reflecting on one’s own implicit biases. Creating an internal culture founded on principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential to building a community-centered library that meets the needs and expectations of its users.

In this course, you will learn about the concrete actions library leaders are taking to make their libraries antiracist today and in the future, and the tools that make it possible. Practical coursework, along with targeted support, will take you from theory to application, helping you to transform your library services to better meet the needs of all your patrons—and attract new ones.

You’ll complete assignments to build your own equity-based initiative over 3+ weeks in an interactive online classroom environment with personal coaching from an expert in the field. In addition, you’ll have access to our foundational bonus content—rich supporting materials you can explore at your own pace, including a series of webinars from Library Journal and School Library Journal contributors,  readings, activities, and videos.

Don’t forget the LM CE Stipend can support your professional development needs: www.Mi.gov/CEstipend

Project READY is a three-year program funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to create professional development for school librarians and other educators focused on racial equity and culturally sustaining pedagogy. The Project READY curriculum aims to do the following:

The gift card winner will be contacted to arrange pickup after the drawing on Monday, August 16.

A 501(c)3 nonprofit, the Friends of the Bay County Libraries uses all proceeds from the book sale to buy equipment, materials, and services for the public not made possible through the Bay County Library System's operating budget. Earnings from previous sales have funded such projects as children's reading programs, library publications, visits by children's authors, annual New York Times best-selling author appearances at the State Theatre, and community meeting room furniture.

Visit www.baycountylibrary.org/FRIENDS for information on the sale and the upcoming appearance of internationally best-selling author Jamie Ford on September 30.

Set up and teardown moving for this year's sale was generously donated by Two Men and a Truck.

So, you feel, as a white woman, that I should have stood in the way if a black man putting on a discussion about the black family because other white people came to me to complain? That is the rental that took place. The meeting room is on the second floor, he stopped no one from attending, and in fact my Board President and our Social Work Intern attended and no hate speech was present at the event.

But thank you for a good example of why some of us have concerns over the very last part of the ALA statement.

What I feel is that:
  1. You've failed to address what concerns were actually raised to you about the speaker in question in favor of nebulously defining it as "bullying."
  2. You trying to boil this down solely to race is an abdication of moral responsibility for your actions and their impacts.
  3. "Stopping no one from attending," as you put it, is a common method of trying to gain mainstream acceptance for hate groups, much like trying to pull people into "debates" about which categories of people should be allowed to have rights.  It also has nothing to do with the impact that hosting the event in question could have on how your library is perceived by targeted groups.
  4. Using individuals associated with your own institution as arbiters of what qualifies as hate speech is a poor rebuttal to my assertion that it would impact your community.

These are people. People that are out patrons. The aspect about conduct is to prevent them from hateful conduct.

Subject: Re: [Michlib-l] New equity and social justice principle added to ALA Code of Ethics
This is a deep and fascinating topic to explore. Like the rest of the country, our profession struggles to find a means to communicate effectively about race, inequality and social justice. Case in point, this week. There is probably an additional layer of discussion for librarians loosely defined as “mission creep”. I believe some of the reaction might stem from this…?

My own point of view (of course!): Over the years, I’ve read about libraries in the south that once regularly denied access to people of color, without batting an eye. I’m betting ALA’s code of ethics espoused the value of publicly shared information even while individual institutions were behaving reprehensibly, and contrary to those “codes”, whatever they were. It seems to me there is a bit of stridency in some of ALA’s language, developed over the last few years. Perhaps, as an organization that represents us in our current form as well as our past, it is making up for its (and our) previous sins.

Interestingly, I was trying to find the 1939 code of ethics (I think this was the first), and came across a study done in the ‘90’s about current attitudes towards ALA’s code. The upshot is that the majority of librarians surveyed had no idea it existed. At least in Michigan, I think we’ve solved that problem!
Here’s the study:

Hi there!
Cromaine has a great free zoom event coming up we'd love to share with you and anyone you think may be interested. On August 18, we will be hosting Professor (and author) Dan Clark as he talks about a fascinating period in Detroit's history - the 1950s. Read the description and click below to register.

"Most people think of the 1950s as a Golden Age for Detroit autoworkers, with steady jobs, increasing wages, and improved benefits propelling them into the middle class. Author Dan Clark's research demonstrates that this was not the case, that the '50s was a decade of job insecurity and economic instability for most Detroit autoworkers."
