Hello: I have gotten some questions regarding the free NARCAN program by Emergent Biosolutions, that I posted about (see post below). Note that the form for public libraries DOES require a signature by a licensed physician or nurse-practitioner. This is because Emergent's program must comply with the NARCAN laws of 50 states. Although Michigan does not currently require a prescription, (here, NARCAN can only be obtained in Michigan at authorized pharmacies), other states have differing rules. Therefore, since NARCAN is a prescription medication, to receive the free NARCAN, Michigan libraries must obtain the signature from a licensed Physician or nurse practitioner. I called the company, and according to their customer service personnel, that Physician or nurse practitioner needs only to sign (ie "prescribe) the NARCAN via the form at the link<https://www.narcan.com/community/education-awareness-and-training-resources/> I sent. Despite the wording of the form, there are no other responsibilities that medical professional has In regard to this program. Libraries may want to seek the assistance of their local community health/public health offices, or, contact the community outreach department of your local hospital. If your library already has a relationship with a nurse practitioner or doctor, then you can consult them too.
