Meet Up & Eat Up & Read Up!
Kari Day, MDE SFS Program Consultant, recorded this short video just for Michigan's public libraries. Watch to learn how you can discover if your library is eligible to serve as a site for summer food and additional ways you might better meet the needs of youth in your community this summer. Recording: SFSP Library Outreach (approx. 8 mins) and Slides. Additional information can be found at https://www.michigan.gov/mde/services/food/summer. The 2026 Kids Favorites!
From August 2025 to February 2026, thousands of young people read and rated hundreds and hundreds of new 2025 picture books, early chapter books, middle-grade books, and YA titles. We are very proud to announce the results of one of our flagship programs, KIDS FAVORITES: Kid Read. Kid Chosen!
We have designed a new look and are issuing the results of the voting a month earlier than usual. The PDFs and spreadsheets we’ve created are the most downloaded features on the CBC site every year.
The top 40 vote-getters out of hundreds of books read and rated per grade category – K-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade, 6th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade – make it to the list. A diversity of content, creators, and publishers has always been a hallmark of this program. You can access the PDF, the spreadsheet, and the visual list with all the book covers on our website.

Freedom to Read Foundation Programming Grants
Each year, the Freedom to Read Foundation distributes $1,000 grants for organizations to support activities that raise awareness of intellectual freedom and censorship issues during Banned Books Week (October 4-10, 2026). Staff at all types of libraries, schools, universities, and non-profit community organizations are encouraged to apply. Applications due April 6.
