I have no idea why you would remember that, but it probably had something to do with the way books are printed. They start with huge sheets of paper and keep folding/cutting them in half, and they probably wanted the books to be of similar length. It's amazing what sticks in our brains!! The versions I read had orange covers and the illustrations were done in black silhouettes. They have updated the series and there is a volume on Harry Houdini that came out in 1969 and was reissued in 1991. These books were published circa the early 1960s (or maybe earlier) and featured b&w line drawings illustrating the person's life. The covers featured the same artwork, and the background color for each book jacket was a different color. I remember reading the book on Eleanor Roosevelt (blue/gray, I think) and the one on Abe Lincoln (tan). Amelia Earhart was also in the series. Big help, right? I poked around with keyword searches in library catalogs, but of course these books are long gone from library shelves. No luck with the Amazon marketplace either.
