World War I's Women Overseas Did you know that women in Michigan did more than serve on the home front during World War I? Some of them made it overseas! They worked as telephone operators, called "Hello Girls," and canteen hostesses, who would help soldiers by sewing on buttons, singing songs, serving coffee, and reminding them of home.
